Finding a Warm Affection for the Things of God

by

A couple of years ago, I came down with the symptoms of a heavy cold and wasn’t feeling well at all. I really wanted to be healed of this; but then I asked myself, why would I want to be healed? Is it just so I can feel better and be comfortable, and for no other reason? I knew it could not be selfishly driven — and I realized the answer would need to be to do better work for God, to radiate His perfection out to the world — and to learn a lesson.

As I thought about the word “cold,” it seemed like such a strange word to assign to this, because I didn’t feel cold at all. I realized that the solution for cold is warmth. So what I needed to do was warm up my affection for the things of God. I took some time to really think about this. Do I have an affection, a warm affection, for the things that are true, a warm affection for the things that are loving, for the things that are principled? I kept working like that for a number of days, and soon I was healed of those symptoms. I don’t know when the healing came, because I wasn’t really focusing on the healing; but I'm so thankful that I can say I know why. It’s because of these truths that we learn in Christian Science and how to live them.
