What a wonderful idea if this year I received only good thoughts instead of gifts under the tree! We read in the Bible, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” James 1:17. Isn’t the truth that I am the image and likeness of God the greatest gift?

Sometimes I wonder if I really need another sweater, another pair of shoes and more jewelry. Even though these are nice to have, can we compare them to the restoration of peace between husband and wife, freedom from the false appetite for food, drug addiction, insecurity, tribal tensions, sibling discords, fear, greed, disease and poverty?

Aren’t there many of us who wish we could go to the store and exchange bracelets for fidelity in our relationships? Wouldn’t we trade some new shirts to be able to talk with a brother we have not spoken with for a year or two? Wouldn’t we trade even a new car for recovery of a son who is captivated with the false desire to use drugs for happiness? How many homes are yearning for a happy Mom instead of a resentful, unhappy one? The world’s so-called poor would trade some of their wonderful material donations for the everlasting awakening that they are also included in God’s abundant circle of plenty and love; that no one was created poor.

These gifts of good thoughts are affordable by everyone; we simply need to share in the giving of them. They do not need wrapping and they don’t have to be mailed. We can keep them, and yet bless with them, and they never run out. These thoughts need to go out with every material gift as well, in order to truly bless. We love our neighbor as ourselves with such good thoughts, and these good gifts are in accord with God’s great laws!
