God is our Great Physician

by

Mrs. Eddy sometimes refers to God as the Great Physician. What a wonderful thought! I love to think of that and to also think about the beautiful statement from Miscellaneous Writings, that God’s preparations for the sick are “potions of His own qualities.” Mrs. Eddy counsels us on page 354, also in Miscellaneous Writings, “A little more grace, a motive made pure, a few truths tenderly told, a heart softened, a character subdued, a life consecrated, would restore the right action of the mental mechanism, and make manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God.” Deeply ponder this! As we become more God-like in our thoughts and in our ways, our body naturally responds to this right thinking by becoming healthier in every way, by expressing graceful freedom of movement and action, and by reflecting the loveliness of God, in a radiant countenance, a loving expression and beautiful form. “As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.” (Psalm 17:15)

Recently, a newspaper has published several articles entitled “Virtue Medicine” which sheds further light on this subject. In this series of articles, it brings out the great importance of expressing such God-like qualities as love, gratitude, joy, forgiveness etc. to bring about a needed healing. These articles give many examples of how, and when these qualities are faithfully expressed the healing results are quick and powerful.

This is further proof of God being the Great Physician. As we demonstrate our oneness with Him by allowing ourselves to become His image and likeness, a tremendous power takes hold. And yes, in so doing, the right action of the mental mechanism is restored, making manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God, as Mrs. Eddy lovingly instructs us.

Isn’t it wonderful to have such a Great and Powerful Physician as our dear Father-Mother God, one we can turn to any time of the day or night and who always has an answer for any difficulty? Eventually the world will come to realize there is no need for these huge medical centers and a countless number of doctors and operations. We have more than we could ever need or ask for by turning to Almighty God! And so my friend, how true it is, we have much to rejoice in and much to be thankful for!

Always remember to put into practice these words: “Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.” (S&H, p. 248)
