The Definition of God
by Mary Beth Singleterry
One thing that we were taught here was from the “Glossary” chapter in Science and Health. We were given several definitions to memorize, one being the definition of God. We were taught to apply it to ourselves, in our watches, to our nation, and to our world. Mrs. Eddy’s definition of God is: “GOD. The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.” (S&H p. 587)
The all-knowing. If God is the all-knowing, I, as His reflection, am all-knowing. I know all that I need to know when I need to know it.
The all-seeing. As God is all-seeing, I, too, am all-seeing. I can see what is necessary for me to see. I have spiritual discernment to hear God’s voice and to judge righteous judgment.
The all-acting. All action is in Mind, and movement is in Mind. Therefore, all action is free, painless, and without restriction.
The all-wise. The only wisdom is from above; and, as I am God’s reflection, I can express that wisdom. I will know the wise and righteous thing to do in every circumstance that comes into my experience.
All-loving. I am the image of Love. God is Love, therefore I can express His love and feel His love and be a loving presence to all that I come into contact with.
These are just some of the ways we were taught to use this definition, to make it our own, to make it a reality so that we can live it and be it. Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Man is God’s image and likeness; whatever is possible to God, is possible to man as God’s reflection.” (Misc. p. 183)
I am grateful for this Truth, and to Mrs. Eddy for giving us Science and Health and Prose Works so that we can daily make it a living reality in our lives.
