Translation, Transfiguration, and Ascension

When we begin to demonstrate the infinitude of Christian Science, we begin to see that we do not have to get something “out there” to demonstrate present perfection. Perfection is not “out there,” it is within. We always have been perfect, are now, and always will be. It is only the belief of mortal mind which tells us to sin, to get sick and die. What we need is a revealing of our present perfection. How do we handle the suggestions of sin, sickness, and death? Do we turn our backs upon them and forget them? No, that would be impossible. God’s idea must continually express Him; to turn our backs upon a problem without demonstrating perfection, is to go down in defeat. We must begin to see what has been reversed. When we hear the statement that man is mortal, we turn our thoughts to God and know that His idea is ever present with Him and therefore is perfect. This is translating. It is putting the sense of things into the original, instead of changing the perfect original into an imperfect counterfeit that is liable to every error of mortal mind.

Can you translate a part of God’s goodness? No. To completely translate our being, we must translate completely. It cannot be partially done. The infinite nature of God must be realized and demonstrated.

We must translate all activities and thoughts into their proper place and handle the universal thought. For example: if there was a belief of heart attack, you must handle the belief of universal acceptance. Then you must realize that Love’s motions cannot be stopped or attacked. The universal (majority) belief would attempt to keep us in matter. We must translate all of the activities we come in contact with and thereby bring them up to a higher level of consciousness while we become a transparency for Mind. In this way, we change the basis of universal thought from a material sense of things to a spiritual sense of allness. We bring forth a more perfect individual, family, city, state, and nation. We bring forth a higher order of politics, economics, religion, and thereby cleanse humanity of their sins.

We must understand all activity and put it into the original sense of Spirit. We must understand the material base these activities dwell upon. If the base is good and the system points Godward, our job is much easier, but if it is bad and degrades mankind, we have a struggle on our hands which demands much demonstration. Mrs. Eddy clarifies the thought of translation when she says, “If you refer to the removal of a person to heaven, without his subjection to death, I modify my affirmative answer. I believe in this removal being possible after all the footsteps requisite have been taken up to the very throne, up to the spiritual sense and fact of divine substance, intelligence, Life, and Love. This translation is not the work of moments; it requires both time and eternity. It means more than mere disappearance to the human sense; it must include also man’s changed appearance and diviner form visible to those beholding him here.” (Misc. 67:27) In other words, this translation must be seen and its results felt before it can be of any use to mankind, or can even be thought of as translation. Again she says, “Christian Science translates Mind, God, to mortals.” (Misc. 22:10-11) When Christian Science is understood, it will translate humanity and humanity’s activities into the realm of Mind. Through Science we translate. We see the language of God reflected in all things and demonstrate their perfection.

Transfiguration is the changed form or appearance of someone in their character and expression. We commonly associate the word with the Transfiguration on the Mount when Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John. What was the Transfiguration on the Mount and what can we learn from it? Jesus, through an understanding of translation, brought forth Moses who represented the Law, Elias who represented prophecy, the fullness of the Christ, and the Christ which Jesus brought forth which was the Science of his own being. So, for a full realization of what true transfiguration is, we must bring forth and fulfill more of the Law, the Decalogue, usher in prophecy, Elias, and bring forth more of the Christ, Science, as did the Master. We must remember that Moses and Elias did not call Jesus forth. He brought them into the oneness of Mind, the divinity of the Christ. The transfiguration was the Master’s demonstration of ascending glory which pointed to resurrection. Mrs. Eddy says, “Human lives are yet uncarved,–in the rough marble, encumbered with crude, rude fragments, and awaiting the hammering, chiselling, and transfiguration from His hand.” (Misc. 360:2) Transfiguration occurs through a knowledge and demonstration of translation which comes to life in Christian Science. The radiant light that clothed Jesus was the Christ light. It was the fulfillment of the Decalogue and prophecy. It was bringing forth light which would lead all men to the ever-present Christ.

Are we not all ascending? Are we not all demonstrating the perfection of being? The infinite nature of Love is becoming increasingly apparent to our vision and we are moment by moment ascending. The Master appeared to rise and leave the scene of his earthly experience. He did not, his thought was merely becoming more in tune with the universe which he knew was his. He did not leave his disciples, they left him. He appeared no longer to their mortal vision and therefore they thought he had gone somewhere, yet he was right there ready to be seen by those who had the vision of perfection. The limited thought of the disciples did in time ascend also, but only when their concept of the universe changed to a spiritual one. As we ascend, we do not leave a world of woe, but we are ushering in a world of goodness, the world which has always been present. Jesus’ demonstration eventually led the way to Christian Science. We too must rise to the heights of Love and leave a better state because of having passed this way.

Moral Idiocy and its Manifestations

Moral idiocy is a term we seldom hear of in the study of Christian Science, and yet it is a term which we should be most familiar with because it does more harm than most forms of animal magnetism. This form of malicious animal magnetism puts individuals to sleep when they should be most awake. It lowers a veil between them and the problem that confronts them. It leads one to believe all is pacific because they do not comprehend or acknowledge the problem. It is only error attempting to close the eyes of Christian Scientists to the workings of error in their midst.

When Mrs. Eddy received a present from a student that consisted of three monkeys – speak, hear, and see no evil – she immediately remarked that this was not Christian Science. We recognize error and handle it before it handles us. This is as true today as it was then. World disturbances and governmental activity cannot be brushed aside with the statement, “God will take care of it.” We hear this statement too often without the demonstration. The one who usually speaks it is the one who is not demonstrating the goodness of God in all spheres of activity. These individuals are on their elevated platforms and see nothing because the clouds are in front of their eyes. They think this is a wonderful view. All problems must be worked out scientifically through Christ. We never close our eyes, ears, nor do we cease to speak against the evils which attempt to harm mankind. We see and hear the claims of evil and destroy them for what they are. We speak against that which is wrong with the voice of Truth. We do not remain mute when a word can dispel evil.

On page 103 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, she says, “The malicious form of hypnotism ultimates in moral idiocy.” Mankind in general and Christian Scientists in particular are being hypnotized into believing that there are no problems in our land. They dismiss it with a statement again not backed up with demonstration such as, “If there is, God will take care of it.” Many Christian Scientists are of the opinion that Christian Science is here to supply their material wants and that God will handle all their problems without work on their part. This form of evil destroys the very foundations of Christian Science. The social, political, economic, and religious problems of this age must be seen by us and destroyed through a correct application of the Science of Christianity. The correct sense of activity must be brought forth.

A malicious form of hypnotism is that which is usually directed by someone at another. Therefore, it must be seen that Christian Scientists are being maliciously attacked or handled, because they will not recognize the errors which confront this age. They will not become warriors, instead they sleep in their dream world watching television from their favorite chair. They seem to think Christian Science is here to supply pleasures for material sense. These individuals cry, “Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 6:14) The maliciousness of this form of animal magnetism is quite evident because it is keeping the very elect fooled. Its attempt is to destroy the camp of the Father before it even goes to battle. On page 210 of Miscellany, Mrs. Eddy says: “Certain individuals entertain the notion that Christian Science Mind-healing should be two-sided, and only denounce error in general, –saying nothing, in particular, of error that is damning men. They are sticklers for a false, convenient peace, straining at gnats and swallowing camels. The unseen wrong to individuals and society they are too cowardly, too ignorant, or too wicked to uncover, and excuse themselves by denying that this evil exists. This mistaken way, of hiding sin in order to maintain harmony, has licensed evil, allowing it first to smoulder, and then break out in devouring flames. All that error asks is to be let alone; even as in Jesus’ time the unclean spirits cried out, ‘Let us alone; what have we to do with thee?’”

The hope of hypnotic tricksters is to have as few warriors on the field of battle as possible, then they can pick off the warriors one by one. Moral idiocy is a form of error which is most distressing if one looks at the material side of the picture and sees its accomplishments. Christian Scientists are certainly asleep to the errors that confront this age and of the methods of those who would destroy religion and country.

When one reaches the state of thought where he thinks he knows more than the rest of mankind because he is a Christian Scientist, and thinks he is protected because of his religion and therefore need not do protective work, then stay away from him. That person is a dangerous individual to be near; do not keep company with him. He is blinded by his own false sense of morality. He has lost all rationality and is usually very hard to reason with. When Christianity, manifest as wisdom, does not go hand in hand with morality there is a great problem. Morality is a human quality, whereas, wisdom is a divine manifestation needed to bring activity to a previously lethargic thought. So, a moral idiot is one who thinks everything is all right when it is not. He will not look at the errors which confront this age. He feels justified in his state of idiocy.

On page 112 of Miscellaneous Writings, Mrs. Eddy says, “The mental stages of crime, which seem to belong to the latter days, are strictly classified in metaphysics as some of the many features and forms of what is properly denominated, in extreme cases, moral idiocy.” It is true that extreme cases of this hypnotic evil manifest themselves in the case Mrs. Eddy gives about President Garfield’s assassin, but the states of like thought though not so severe, and which we are talking about, are moral idiocy also. There is too much moral knowing in the Christian Science movement and not enough Christian knowing. They are different because Christian knowing is permeated with love and moral knowing with human goodness. Christian knowing recognizes the troubles that beset humanity and sets out to heal them and moral knowing only sees the lack of a TV set, a car, etc. It cares nothing about mankind. One is human and the other is divine. This is also an indication that there is need of more Christliness in the Christian Science movement instead of the letter. It appears that many Christian Scientists are forgetting their fellow man in the attempt to demonstrate a nice home, a swimming pool, or a car for themselves. Quite a selfish attitude when we begin to see what it is all about. Mrs. Eddy started healing all mankind before she ever became wealthy, and this must be our way. As Christian Scientists we know that the basis of Christian Science is Love, and nothing is more basic to Love than the act of giving, or the recognition of world problems and the handling of them. Again Mrs. Eddy has this to say on page 113 of Miscellaneous Writings: “Thank God! this evil can be resisted by true Christianity. Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and in heaven.” Love is requisite for a healing of the world’s ills, we do not love our neighbor until this is done.

The only way to destroy the evils of this age is to love our fellow man more and take up much more of the cross in our “daily walk and conversation.” If we continue to think of Christian Science as a supplier of our human wants instead of a demonstration Godward, we will not have Christian Science much longer. He who seeks Christian Science for material gain loses the Spirit. We have the material manifestations of our demonstrations because anything else would be an abomination against God. We must have wealth from a proper standpoint of demonstration and not from the position of human want. We do not heal anything because it is painful to mortal sense, but rather, because it is an abomination against God’s perfection.

When we see the world’s problems as our problems, we will then demonstrate the universality of Christian Science, and not before. Every error that presents itself to our thinking must be healed. Just because it is far away and has no immediate danger to us, is not a valid reason for not handling the situation. Moral idiocy must be handled or Mrs. Eddy’s prophecy for Christian Science in this century will never be realized. Mrs. Eddy says on page 249 of Miscellany: “Hate is a moral idiocy let loose for one’s own destruction. Unless withstood, the heat of hate burns the wheat, spares the tares, and sends forth a mental miasma fatal to health, happiness, and the morals of mankind, — and all this only to satiate its loathing of love and its revenge on the patience, silence, and lives of saints.” We handle moral idiocy (hatred) when we handle the false idea of man as a mortal. The man that uses Christian Science for his material pleasure, without helping mankind with their problems, is a hater of men and God. There is no place for such a man in heaven. This hatred is a moral hatred and must be handled. It is latent, and is in the dark corners of thought and must be rooted out. We must not let it fool the elect and destroy the harvest time.

When we learn and demonstrate the universal sense of Love, we will not be able to see a problem and leave it uncorrected. The individual or individuals involved need your love to heal the situation. God demands perfection. A love of God and man heals moral idiocy. A lack of love leaves the world’s problems unsolved, lets humanity suffer, and denies God’s entrance into the hearts of men.

Creative Force and Atomic Power

In the first chapter of Genesis, we read that everything that God made was not only good, but very good. There was nothing made that had even a tinge of evil to it. The omnipotence of God precludes any supposed power apart from Him. We read in Isaiah 45:5, “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me….” The second chapter of Genesis dealt with the supposed separation of man from his Maker, and God is now demoted from omnipotent goodness to a capricious tribal god, with both good and evil intent for his creation, man. Both of these creations in Genesis cannot be true, for they are antagonistic to one another.

Throughout the course of human history there have been two classes of men in constant struggle for supremacy – one for the supremacy of good and the other for the supremacy of evil. One type has sought the true nature of himself by searching for a higher and nobler concept of Deity. He has struggled for this higher concept for the betterment of himself and his neighbors. The second type is the old man. He seeks the nature of matter as the ultimate. He seeks his pleasures from matter and denies God, and then seeks laws and measures to protect his way of life. To protect his passion and greed for matter, he establishes himself as the authority and maintains this authority through force if necessary. This individual is the pseudo-intellectual. He attempts to make matter, and all that pertains to it, intelligent. Both of these types exist today, but both have developed in power and are separated more today than ever before, as the thinking of one is diametrically opposed to the other.

Enlightened thinking has divested matter of its solid pretensions by unveiling its false nature. Human intelligence has exposed matter’s innermost secrets to view with the electron microscope and other scientific paraphernalia. Man has come to the conclusion thus far, that force of some great magnitude governs matter. Material scientists endeavoring to name this force, call it anti-matter, gravity, electricity or neutrinos. We see now that mortal man no longer believes matter to be the ultimate, but is accepting the proposition that matter is but the outcome of something more ethereal, such as force or energy. They are coming to the irresistible conclusion that force is mind, not matter. Mankind has begun to translate force into its proper classification, and this classification process will enable man to see the spiritual manifestation of God.

Mortal mind is annoyed because it sees only dust in the microscope. What did mortal mind expect to see? It now has become self-evident to mortal thinking that its so called kingdom is nothing. All of its pleasures and joys are vain. The old man is angry, his systems of power and prestige are crumbling into their primitive state – dust, and its veil is being rent. Mortal sense is displeasured and angry. It is seeking to destroy its tormentor with the atom. The smallest and last particle of matter to be discovered is revolting. Isn’t that just like mortal mind, trying to be something with the nothing it doesn’t have? Trying to be destructive and coercive with something hidden to the unaided eye, error would turn its very nothingness upon us to save face.

When Mrs. Eddy wrote the Scientific Statement of Being, error was suppressed and laid waste. This statement completely nullifies the erroneous attraction of mortal mind calling itself material conception. This statement knows no matter. It gives mortal mind no force. Matter has endeavored to become beautiful, attractive and appealing to its own mortal senses, seeking to perpetuate itself. Instead, matter has become awesome and gross and capable of cataclysmic destruction. What is this attraction that conceives materiality, brings forth destruction, and says it controls the solar system and its elements? What then is this façade that man and the universe seek to emulate? On page 35 of Unity of Good, Mrs. Eddy says, “The material atom is an outlined falsity of consciousness, which can gather additional evidence of consciousness and life only as it adds lie to lie. This process it names material attraction, and endows with the double capacity of creator and creation.” Then our concept of creation determines the origin of force and power that we engender in consciousness. The attraction of elements and atoms comes only from lust in matter and its hated reaction to Truth.

This material attraction and creation which has been proved to be false is manifesting itself in the material attraction of atomic energy, calling itself fission and fusion. Matter cannot create a man or a woman, nor can matter create an atom bomb. It is only the anti-Christ which lusts after itself. It is endeavoring to perpetuate self, and it is this self which creates man and its false image with atomic reaction as its aggressive and forceful tendencies. Nothing ever reacts unless it has been questioned, tormented, stressed or agitated. Christian Science has done this to mortal mind. Isn’t it strange that in one breath mortal mind says it can create from dust, and then another breath says it can destroy all living things with dust? Error is such a two-faced liar.

Divine Love governs, guides, and guards His ideas. God is the only attraction men can seek or find. The attraction is the love of the Father-Mother for her children. All force, might, power and intelligence come from this Love, for it is not limited to finite affinity. Love knows no matter. The lust, hypocrisy, revenge and sensualism in this age, calling itself love, is blind stupidity. It is seeking to usurp the love of God and claim for the devil that which never was, nor never can be his. Through Christian Science man has been shown that the mortal creation and that which supposedly creates it, is neither wisdom, truth, nor love.

Now that the falsity of material creation, its attractions and forces, has been exposed as nothing, mortal mind, in a state of confusion, rebels. This rebelling process is manifest as the immorality of mortal mind and its hatred of truth. It seeks to destroy through explosive atomic power. Is it not strange that human attraction and atomic power are relying upon each other for mutual existence? Love is needed to quench the fiery darts of the wicked, for hatred brings spontaneous combustion, hence fire.

It was the discovery of Christian Science which enabled material science to discover the atom, for Science loosed the bound thought of a false creation. In Science and Health Mrs.Eddy says, “The multiplication of a human and mortal sense of persons and things is not creation. A sensual thought, like an atom of dust thrown into the face of spiritual immensity, is dense blindness instead of a scientific eternal consciousness of creation.“ How can atomic power be anything in the face of spiritual immensity, for the false belief about atomic power proceeds from sensuality. Again, Mrs. Eddy says in Miscellaneous Writings, “Atomic action is Mind, not matter.“ Divine Love, conquering all hatred, revenge and lust will destroy all the concepts and phases of error before mortal mind can release another deluge of so-called power.

If we were to read what Mrs. Eddy says about atom, atomic power, etc., we would find that she usually couples it with a statement of creation. We can now see how she was able to envision her lesson sermon, “Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?“ On page 23 of Miscellaneous Writings Mrs. Eddy says, “The universe, including man, is not a result of atomic action, material force or energy; it is not organized dust.“ She knew mortal mind would attempt revolt when the false sense of creation was known to be a myth, so she gave us this lesson sermon to protect ourselves. Mrs. Eddy knew that the basic unit of matter, called atom, would be discovered to have no power but a false sense of force. Therefore she knew it would seek revenge on its persecutor with the intention of producing much havoc, and this only to blur the thought and confuse men. Mind is indeed the only atomic action.

Atomic energy is said to exist because energy becomes liberated by changes in the nucleus of an atom. Can this force or energy affect substantially any physical condition? If we believe mortal mind’s report, it can produce much suffering, but only to mortal sense. The narrative of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego furnishes us evidence of the powerlessness of hate, and the perfect protection afforded by divine Love. Had these children hated their persecutors they would have brought spontaneous combustion. However, their love of everyone saved them from the fiery furnace. Love was their protection and Love is our protection. When we believe the claims of mortal mind we give it a physical condition to affect. Without mortal creation and mortal thinking, atomic power is nonexistent in matter. Atomic energy is found to be the basis of Love when we see it spiritually. It binds all of God’s creation together. If we reverse the order of creation and see it as spiritual, then the following of Mrs. Eddy’s in Science and Health is proven, “CREATOR. Spirit; Mind; intelligence; the animating divine Principle of all that is real and good; …God, who made all that was made and could not create an atom or an element the opposite of Himself.” All atoms, all elements, all force, power, energy, activity, and all liberation come from God, Mind the only cause and Creator.

The universe represents the wholeness of God’s being. It is one system, the cosmos. This wholeness knows no destructive force because it is created in the image and likeness of Love, not hate. No vacuum is known, no void, for there are no vacuums in Science. Error is not at sometime replaced by Truth. Destructive atomic power is not at some period replaced with a power more pacific. Eternal Principle is governing and maintaining all throughout eternity.

We have all heard much about the program, “Atoms for Peace.“ [A program designed to inform the public of peaceful uses of atomic energy during 1950’s and 1960’s.] We as Christian Scientists know there can be no such thing as an atoms for peace until man sees the atom as spiritual and not material. In this way its sting is taken away and there are no destructive tendencies. We do not seek advantages and pleasures through material force or energy. We do not seek a better living standard through matter. We seek a better sense of Life and the high standards of Principle as understood in Christian Science. Our needs are then met. We must begin to see a spiritual universe and man which is never separated by matter. Then and only then will God’s creation come on earth.

To believe in the evolution of a material universe and of a material man, in a material manner, is to gradually give more power and attention to matter — to “add lie to lie.“ It makes matter more intelligent and substantial. The involvement of the spiritual universe as seen by the perfect idea is unfoldment and development, wherein man and the universe, His wholeness, is derived spiritually.

The first deluge came through water, which we know as the “great flood.“ This did not destroy error, for error’s malicious tendencies are more tenacious today than ever before. Noah sought to purify his people’s thinking, but they would not listen. Therefore, they were flooded out. Error did not have its secrets revealed so its hidden maliciousness remained to be destroyed. Noah did not know how to handle the secret workings of malicious animal magnetism, so he built an ark to protect himself and his family. Human hatred of the Truth is again raising its ugly hydra head. However, in this age error will not be flooded out because it is too strong and the waves would overturn the ark. Purification must come through a different and stronger means, and this time by fire. The hidden tendencies of mortal mind have been brought to the surface of error to be seen and destroyed, and destroyed they will be. Neither Noah nor his people had Christian Science.

Today we do have the truth of divine Science to establish an ark of perfect protection. This is not done by being wholly defensive, but by being on the offensive. It is attacking that which seeks to destroy the foundation of Truth. We are surrounded in a sphere (universe) of flame right now. This is the perfect purifying force of the Christ. Error cannot release its destruction on mankind if Christian Scientists check the sensualism and animosity of mortal mind. We have the means to do this, so it must be done. We have uncovered error and are its master. It does not control or harm us. We must let our light go forth with consuming fire, destroying all error before us. We must never let the counterfeit fire of sexuality produce violent agitation, tumult, or destruction. If there are to be trials and afflictions, we stand by the Christ and eject forcibly the irritant in consciousness.

The pillar of fire which appeared in the night to the Israelites, was Moses’ love for them. It was this light of fire which led them out of the darkened thought. We too must bring forth this pillar of fire so that all may learn from it. It is this pillar of fire which counteracts any fire of sensualism calling itself atomic power. We too are leading a nation into the promised land. We must let more love shine forth.

The parable of the Tares and Wheat gives us an account of the method that we should use in handling malicious animal magnetism. The tares were sewn at night which represents darkness, or the Adam dream. The servants wanted to go and pull up the tares, but the householder said no. He knew that when the tares were fully grown, they would destroy themselves by their very appearance. They would be seen as nothing in time of harvest, so he awaited God’s disposal of events. Evil continues to grow alongside of good until the time of harvest. This is the time when evil is completely destroyed because its nothingness is seen. Then the tares (malicious animal magnetism) are seen in its many phases, and bound into bundles (phases are handled), and cast into the fire. They no longer grow in the field. The wheat or goodness is not destroyed but is harvested. In Miscellany page 249, Mrs. Eddy says, “Unless withstood, the heat of hate burns the wheat, spares the tares, and sends forth a mental miasma fatal to health, happiness, and the morals of mankind,– and all this only to satiate its loathing of love and its revenge on the patience, silence, and lives of saints.“ It might also be pointed out that if the tares are eaten, they produce violent convulsion and even death. From this parable we learn the prophecy of the Master’s. Christian Scientists will handle error in its various phases and bind error so it cannot produce discord. Then Christian Scientists will cast error into the fire. The field of wheat is not put to the flame, for this could only serve the desire of error. Mortal mind is destroyed by the purifying elements of the spiritual creation. “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” (Matthew 13:43) Heaven will come to earth, and Christianity will constitute all Science where atoms and elements are classified in Spirit, and Love will be acknowledged as the great and only cause.

Page 3 — We must thoroughly handle the hatred of original sin directed at her, but which appears as our own thinking about her. Know there is no resistance or contempt for our Leader, her womanhood, her mothering, and her demonstration of Christian Science, her revelation of God’s motherhood.


Page 10 — The official rejection of our Leader in Boston produces an uphill struggle in the field to receive the most meager of healings and supply. If we specifically handle hatred for the revelator, healing will be widespread and instantaneous once again. The mental rejection of Mrs. Eddy tips the scale in favor of medicine, psychology, electricity, etc., and healing wanes; healing is wrenched from womanhood and returned to male energy.


Page 13 — We must handle the malice for the revelator, and we must be very alert to the dragon’s methods of warfare against the remnant of her seed. Although the elect are not totally deceived by these lies, they react to the errors produced by its distortion. It would overwhelm us by inducing feelings of sensitiveness, agitation, anxiety, justifiable irritation, futility, impatience, exasperation, and then fear and apathy. It may argue reaction, spite, anger, retaliation, resentment, sorrow, self-pity, loneliness, and the right to harbor ill will, but none of these are the divine method of warfare.


Page 14 — The remnant must be alert that they are not caught by this contagion and be found indirectly ‘knowing’ the error about Mrs. Eddy by reacting to it. It is a lie, an illusion. Remember, we are not fighting people, we are handling the belief of original sin.

Our Leader says, “No power can withstand divine Love.” (S&H p.224:31 only) Constancy and compassion are the only answer to this lie of sin; we must dearly love the revelator and her revelation. Our work is to see the nothingness of the lies about her and not to react. We must throw all of our weight “into the right scale.” Declare often, firmly and lovingly, Mary Baker Eddy is the Leader of the Christian Science movement and Christian Scientists know this as a fact. There is no power of animal magnetism to argue otherwise.


Page 16 — We can and do want to help our Leader and nothing can hinder us. Handle ambition, pride, and popularity. Know that Christian Scientists are awake and that officials cannot be glamored and covet praise. Malicious mental malpractice cannot use me. I am immune to the mesmeric and hypnotic influences of A.M. The all-absorbing Love destroys hate.


Page 17 — Mentally handle hatred, contempt and malice for the revelator’s demonstration of womanhood, mothering, the motherhood of God, and our Leader’s Mother Church.


Page 26 — “Keeping the truth of her character before the public will help the students, and do more than all else for the Cause. Christianity in its purity was lost by defaming and killing its defenders. Do not let this period repeat this mistake. The truth in regard to your Leader heals the sick and saves the sinner. The lie has just the opposite effect, and the evil one that leads all evil in this matter knows this more clearly than do the Christian Scientists in general.” (MBE, Collectanea p.74)


Page 30 — Mrs. Eddy wrote, “When the Discoverer of Christian Science in this age must deal with sinning, so-called Christian Scientists, those who know their Leader as she is must be awake to the delusions of M.A.M. that would make Jerusalem a waste and desert place. Take up those transgressors in our midst who would undo the work of their Leader. Waken to the need of this hour that those who would set aside the Manual of The Mother Church with its just By-Laws see the sinfulness of their ways.” (Divinity Course and General Collectanea p.53.)


Page 37 — We must defend our Leader. She says, “You cannot suffer for defending me which is acceptable in God’s sight. ‘Inasmuch as ye do it unto one of these little ones, you have done it to Me’, are His words. You cannot love me too much, for the love of good fulfils the law of Truth….” (DCC p.89) Mrs. Eddy understood the nature of this evil when she said, “I know the crucifixion of the one who presents truth in its highest aspect will be this time through a bigger error, through mortal mind instead of its lower stratum, or matter, showing that the idea given of God this time is higher, clearer and more permanent than before….You, dear student, are doubtless praying for me—and so the modern Law-giver is upheld for a time.” (DCC p.107) Who is praying today to uphold her place in Bible prophecy? If she did not fulfill Bible prophecy, Christian Science is not the revelation of Truth. Mrs. Eddy says, “Attacks on the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science are attacks on the Cause itself. When will you see this, and stop these efforts of animal magnetism to destroy us? The students alone will be responsible if these demon schemes are not ended.” (DCC p.124)

Christian Scientists are being mentally and morally paralyzed by the suggestions of malicious animal magnetism to resist the truth about their Leader. Mrs. Eddy says, “Malpractice would dominate, and unless Christian Scientists are awake to it and alert, it would hold back Christian Science for centuries.” (DCC p.225) Many minds are at work to keep us from seeing our Leader correctly. We must declare against this lie with an absolute conviction of its nothingness. We must not weigh against ourselves by admitting that this lie has any power. We must stand with the truth that we do love God and His representative, our neighbor, as ourselves. We must speak to the lie with the authority that our Leader has given to us. We must not react. Hate cannot claim to be a reality. Love is the fulfilling of the law. We must hold continually to our gratitude for her. Then joy keeps the door of spiritual revelation open. Our Leader says, “Our salvation is through Love. Call God Love always and bend all your efforts toward achieving perfect love in thought, word and deed. This is the way.” (DCC p.181) Absolutely refuse to react to this error in any way. See Truth alone.


Page 49 — How can these errors be corrected? Reverse the lies, stop the specific argument and claim of M.A.M., the red dragon, that God does not know Mrs. Eddy. Know that Christian Scientists do understand through their Leader’s writings that God knows our Leader and each one of us through the human consciousness He bestows. We are alert to consistently keep the fact of God’s Allness and the consequent nothingness of evil before us. There is no opposition to Love and Love’s idea. Our Leader says, “One’s protection against hate is the realization that divine Love flows through every avenue, cleanses every channel, and removes every obstruction. In fact, the law of Love is the law of elimination and the law of destruction to everything unlike itself.” (DCC p.210) God knows each and every one of us and we are not separated from His healing love. Know that man is loved and inseparable from Life.


Page 55 — Our Leader said, “You are master of the bad tendencies of Socialism and not at all at their cruel mercies.” (DCC p.108) If we allow mortal mind to proclaim that we are all the same, and allow Mrs. Eddy to become the focal point of this attack, the world suffers from an obscuration of individuality and identity. This is M.A.M. Does it seem obvious to you that the attempted takeover of all mankind by this error is nothing but unhandled hatred for Mrs. Eddy?


Pages 63-64 — Our Leader says, “Are you a Christian Scientist or not? Then take up the work and put an end to these scandalous attacks on your Leader and Best Earthly Friend. God is judging us this hour, and we shall be accountable to Him for all.” (DCC p.52) The red dragon cannot tell us we would be embarrassed to speak up for our Leader, for we are not cowards. We reflect Spirit as the source of all power and we have the dominion that enables us to help our Leader. There is no egotism of place or pride of intellect. No one but Mary Baker Eddy could have discovered Christian Science. The law of evil does not govern us. It is Love alone that founded our Cause and we will not allow the malice of A.M. to keep us from loving our Leader. She said, “My beloved students: Enter into the closet of divine Love and there in humility ask this ever-present power to shield and to defend you from the enemies of your souls and bodies, to defend you and guard you and guide you in the paths of righteousness, pleasantness and Truth.” (DCC p.160) See the nothingness of the lie by feeling the Allness that is divine Love.


Page 67 — “Declaring the truth regarding an individual or leader, rendering praise to whom praise is due, is not a symptom of this contagious malady, but persistent pursuit of his or her person is.” (Miscellany p.116) Personality is what personal sense sees, individuality is what God sees of His own, and, recognizing our oneness with God, we can see it also.


Page 77 — Know that Christian Scientists in positions of trust cannot be handled by projected arguments to diminish their regard for their Leader. In the Manual, Art. XXXIII Sect. 2, duties of the Committee on Publication, we read, “It shall be the duty of the Committee on Publication to correct…injustices done Mrs. Eddy….”


Page 78 — As the children of Soul, we deny the lie that says loving Mrs. Eddy is personality worship and deification. We cannot be mentally manipulated or hypnotized into believing such foolishness. It is nothing but projected mesmerism. Nothing can deprive me of my gratitude for her because divine Love fills all consciousness and removes all obstructions. This argument will not keep me from expressing my love for my Leader in testimonies, in speaking with friends or in defending her when any Christian Scientist speaks in an unscientific manner about her. I will not make a reality of this error by getting upset over it. I recognize it for the lie that it is, m.a.m., and know that divine Love destroys its influence right now. I will not be intimidated by this lie.


Page 82 — What are the results in the world of this error?

Christian Science is not understood or accepted. There are vicious attacks upon mothering, the motherhood of God, womanhood, and women. The elevation of Adam, the male element, is then given free reign to destroy all the progress that genuine womanhood has made. Love alone dissolves sin and annuls the hatred for Mrs. Eddy—the apathy and indifference that allow contempt for womanhood to go unchecked. It is never personal—it is always animal magnetism.

…The work of many minds is attempting to build a new church. That plan of malicious animal magnetism must be defeated. Our Leader said, “It is up to the students to protect that demonstration [the building of The Mother Church] –from the enemy within our gates.” (DCC p.198) We must always keep the fact of Mind’s Allness and the nothingness of error before us and, doing this, we can root out the lies of A.M. and the attempt to destroy our Leader’s demonstration. Our Leader was chosen by Mind to build The Mother Church; she did not make mistakes. This lying argument does not give anyone the right to violate the Manual.


Page 95 — We must know that what we stand for in regard to Mrs. Eddy is a blessing and our sure defense. “God works with you, not with error.” (Collectanea p.131) We must demand that evil loosen its hold upon us and that we no longer react to it. Know that you cannot become accustomed to declaring the truth and seeing no results. Demand that the hatred for our precious Leader is dissolved in the love you hold for her and the love God holds for you because of your inclusion in the remnant. Teachers and practitioners, get your patients, pupils, and friends working. Pray for the office of the Board of Directors so it can be awakened to see the error of its ways and thus cause male energy to lose its grip and stranglehold on our church.


Page 97 — Pray that our Mother Church can become more motherly and that male domination and male energy can be removed. Where would we be without her? Every healing, every insight into revelation, every inspired thought we receive while studying the Bible comes to us through her demonstration.

….Since the truth of Christian Science is always the answer to every problem, it follows that the messenger of this Truth must be pointing the way to the solution. Her name is one with Christian Science, just as Jesus is one with Christianity, and she stands forever as its Leader and will never be forgotten, even in a thousand years.


Pages 99-100 — Mrs. Eddy said, “My dear students, God has told me this much for you: At the end of this century, Christian Science will be the only universally acknowledged religion in the world, because the other religions have no demonstrating basis. But much work remains undone, much self-denial waits for us all before this end can be fulfilled. The main thing is for us to handle M.A.M. that would make us fold our hands till this manifests itself. But Truth demands work, work, work! Never forget that!” (DCC p.249)


Page 101 — We must not listen to the lie that our Leader is unnecessary. We must not react to it nor make a reality of it. Hold to the fact that our Leader is one with her revelation. Doing this, we gain divine Love and lose false material sense. This is the Love that will never fail and is the divine power that heals instantaneously.


Page 116 — Mrs. Eddy gave us the collective means to handle original sin, and when handled, obedience will flourish where disobedience once flooded, and love radiate where impurity and harshness abounded. The root of the resistance is hatred for the woman. This is original sin handling Christian Scientists and it robs the whole world of Christian Science. All the difficulties we face today in the movement and in our nation stem from hatred of Mary Baker Eddy. Human methods will never correct this problem nor achieve the removal of this hatred. She says, “Love is the liberator.” (S&H p.225:21)

In Miscellaneous Writings (p.279), our Leader says, “We, to-day, in this class-room, are enough to convert the world if we are of one Mind; for then the whole world will feel the influence of this Mind….” She then tells us that collective means are necessary before the world can feel the influence of the one Mind. Like Joshua, she says, we should walk around the walls of the enemy “together.” Like the disciples and Jesus we would meet in the upper room “together.” We are not following her directions.


Page 118 — Many of you have left the Christian Science church because you are tired of the strife and hatred there. The only way this hatred can be healed is through love, love enough to go into that congregation and pray for that congregation. You need not join that church, but you must join together in prayer for that congregation. This will do more than almost anything else to heal the errors in the Christian Science church. In your prayers, specifically handle for the congregation the hatred of original sin for the revelator and the revelation.

Christian Scientists are not marching around the walls together. We are not meeting in the upper sanctuary together. We are not of one Mind. Specifically handle for the congregation the claim of original sin—the hatred of the red dragon for the woman God-crowned.


“The Father, the Prodigal, and the Citizen”

Page 141 — When we love her, we destroy the work of the dragon. Not loving her, we listen to the dragon, and all the horrors of hell attempt to drown mankind.


Page 141 — In her Association Address, Sue Harper Mims relates, “I do not think anyone in this room will ever adore the personality of Mrs. Eddy, but you will love her and reverence her as the highest manifestation of Love that is in the world, or that has been for eighteen hundred years….” (WKMBE Vol. II, p.57)


Page 142 — All of us hear the lament, why doesn’t Christian Science heal like it used to? Our Leader explained the reason why very, very clearly in a letter to Judge Hanna when she said, “Keeping the truth of her character before the public will help the students, and do more than all else for the Cause. Christianity in its purity was lost by defaming and killing its defenders. Do not let this period repeat this mistake. The truth in regard to your Leader heals the sick and saves the sinner. The lie has just the opposite effect, and the evil one that leads all evil in this matter knows this more clearly than do the Christian Scientists in general.” (DCC p.109 and Coll. P.74)


Page 143 — “In proportion as students of Christian Science recognize, express, and wisely proclaim the truth about their Leader, will they progress in the demonstration of her discovery. To become the true beneficiaries of Christian Science, acknowledgment of the spiritual status of its Discoverer and Founder in history and prophecy must be made.” (November 1939 CSJ, p.410) Again, “Only as we recognize the revelator can we understand and obey the revelation.” (WKMBE Vol. II, p.64) Our Leader says it very clearly: “Christian Science is my only ideal; and the individual and his ideal can never be severed. If either is misunderstood or maligned, it eclipses the other with the shadow cast by this error.” (Mis. P.105:20) Irving Tomlinson says, “But if the world is to receive the message of Christian Science which Mrs. Eddy brought, then it must obtain a true estimate of the messenger.” (12 Yrs., p.209) You say, I have the true sense of my Leader! When was the last time you thought of Mrs. Eddy while reading Science and Health or her other works and expressed gratitude? When was the last time you thought of her church, her periodicals, and her Manual without thinking of her? When was the last time you spoke of God in reverent and adoring tones as Mother, not as Father or Father-Mother, but as Mother?


Page 176 — Claiming its own creation as reality, the red dragon, the belief of intelligence in matter (the citizen in the far country), will not allow Christian Scientists to see their Leader as chosen by divine Love. Only love for her can break that lie, for “Against Love, the dragon warreth not long….” (S&H p.567:9)


Page 176 — [example of Mrs. Eddy’s expression of love] The following is related by Mrs. Norton; she had just lost her husband and her baby and Mrs. Eddy sent for her to come and see her: “I shall never forget the first time I talked with her. She had sent for me to call upon her. On entering the room she extended her hand and asked me to be seated. I walked across the room and sat down in a chair. Mrs. Eddy very deliberately arranged her dress and sat down on a sofa. She looked at me so tenderly and patting the sofa beside herself, she said, ‘You are too far away from Mother, darling.’ I immediately went to her. She took me in her arms and kissed me. She was not afraid to express her love humanly, and I did not mistake it, for I learned then and there that divine Love must be expressed humanly in order to heal the broken-hearted. Oh, let us all learn to love as did this precious Christ-idea. Let us love her because she first loved us by teaching us that Life is Love and Love is Life. She is our Mother in Israel and is still saying to us all, ‘You are too far away from Mother, darling.’” (Mary Baker Eddy: The Prophetic and Historical Perspective, by Paul R. Smillie, p.320)


Page 184 — Mrs. Eddy never thought the Board of Directors was to be treated as infallible. Read the following letter from Mrs. Eddy to the Board, written on August 9, 1900: Do not you know that Mr. Armstrong’s dear son is put in just the wrong place for his own good, and the good of our Cause? ….Oh, how long will even the Board of Directors be led by sin and Satan? If another act like this is consummated by you, I will change the entire Board. You give me little cause to have any faith in you. Mary Baker Eddy: Her Spiritual Precepts Vol. V, p.8

The Board of Directors is also being mentally manipulated today and Christian Scientists had better get to work and wake them up.


Page 189 — The erroneous organized mental activity of workers in The Mother Church must be consistently handled by the field. We must know that God, good, reverses every evil argument and effort and brings about the opposite good. We must know that mental workers, under the guise of good, cannot make mortal mind laws. If you have, in the slightest, opposed what Boston is doing and found healing and success blunted, do not wonder why. This organized evil in our church must be met now. We must know immediately and with vigor that those who speak out in honesty and love for their Leader and church are blessed and rewarded and that an uncovering of error does take place and is disposed of in God’s own way.


“Our Leader’s Demonstration of Generic Man”

Page 223 — If we try to see in the mirror of divine Science and our thinking is polluted with latent jealousy or indifference towards her, then we cannot understand her Science. Loving her enables us to see that we are embraced in her demonstration of divine Science. Love demands that we give the great lady our respect, admiration and love. We would have nothing and be nothing without her. All that God asks of us is to support her in her demonstration of divine Science. The woman placed the leaven in the three measures of meal,– there is no place where we are told to add to that leaven or to subtract from the meal. Her demonstration is complete and final and all we have to do is support her demonstration by genuinely loving her.


Page 229 — If we separate Mrs. Eddy from her revelation, we place mankind in darkness. Jesus was removed from his revelation and the Dark Ages came. There is a practical knowledge and demonstration of the way in which we learn how to handle the claims of malicious animal magnetism and it is to empty our minds of evil, fill them with love and become clear channels for truth. Mrs. Eddy’s life demonstration is that example and symbol. Her life and its demonstration of the human and divine coincidence cannot be separated from her gift to the world,– divine Science. Rejecting her, we reject demonstration, healing. Science and Health sets forth the truth that sets man free; but without her demonstration, her life, that truth remains unattainable for large numbers.


Page 230 — [these truths antidote the lies of original sin] The prophecies about the woman are exact:

1. It was prophesied she would be born in God’s latter-day Israel.

2. The revelator of this second coming would be a woman.

3. This woman would write the Open Book of Revelation 10.

4. She would appear in accordance with Daniel’s dates of 1866 and 1875.

5. She would be forsaken, but eventually accepted.

How could we all be this woman?


“Does God Know Mary Baker Eddy and Christ Jesus?”

Page 283 — If the article, quoted in the Sentinel, says that God does not know or choose a mortal, then Mrs. Eddy is not the forever Leader, is not the Leader now and does not fulfill Bible prophecy. But she is and she does. Perhaps this will help to make clear the importance of getting one’s metaphysics correct. And if we deny the fact of our Leader’s spiritual identity, individuality and place, how can we see and understand our own relationship to God? Could this be why healing has so deteriorated in her church? Have we not rejected the human and divine coincidence?


Page 284 — [Reverse the following statements by M.A.M.]

1. God did not choose Mary Baker Eddy.

2. God does not know Mary Baker Eddy.

3. God knows nothing about our existence, therefore there are no Bible prophecies concerning Mary Baker Eddy.

4. Because “God doesn’t know her, we only need the revelation.

5. Because God doesn’t know her, we do not need her.

6. Because God doesn’t know her, we do not need to be obedient, other systems are helpful.

7 Because God doesn’t know mortality nor Mrs. Eddy, I can do whatever I like with impunity.

8. God has no connection with this experience, therefore I need do nothing; I need not take a stand.

9. Denying her demonstration of “sinless humanhood” we can say there is no need to demonstrate, no need to follow.

10. Mary Baker Eddy is not the Leader.

11. Get rid of Mary Baker Eddy and the Movement will prosper; she is the impediment to progress.

12. The Movement will not be accepted with Mrs. Eddy in it.

13 We must therefore reach out to the world through more interesting and newer channels than through the ones she established. She is unimportant.

14. She was no better than I am; I am just as important as she.

15. Because God does not know us, there is no reward for purity and excellence nor punishment for wrong doing; this is all just a dream.


“Christian Scientists and the Child Court Cases”

Page 313 — excerpt from “Handling Animal Magnetism in Healing” by E. Vera Gorringe Plimmer:

We know our Leader’s revelation of Truth means the complete destruction of animal magnetism in all its forms. But animal magnetism, symbolized from the beginning as the serpent, still tries to bite the heel of the woman, its destroyer, because its supposititious subtle instinct tells it that the woman, the spiritual idea of Love, will bruise its head, will utterly destroy its so-called intelligence. Therefore, in our healing work it is essential to deal with malpractice against Mrs. Eddy, who represented the divine idea, as an important part of our counteracting the animal magnetism operating against the healing Truth itself. I am deeply convinced that bringing our Leader’s name and place more into the front line of our practice and handling the world’s resistance against her divine mission can do more to facilitate good and quick healing than any other single factor.


Page 315 — Now we are told our Leader was so unimportant that God did not even know her and she, like all Christian Scientists, was a follower of Christ Jesus. Did God say that? The diabolical nature of animal magnetism was uncovered by Mary Baker Eddy, not by Christ Jesus. We are followers of the one who revealed the final revelation, the one who uncovered malicious animal magnetism. But then all the men want a male leader and most of the women do too. To love and support our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, is not deification; it is obedience to God and anyone who says it is deification doesn’t know the difference between the right road and road apples.


Page 318 — Mrs. Eddy said, “When I see a student grateful I know he is safe.” (DCC p.235) We must handle malicious animal magnetism and its hatred of Mary Baker Eddy. Future generations will look back on our time and wonder aloud at our ignorance and sensuality. They will shake their heads in disbelief, and cry over the intentional blindness with which we rushed headlong into disaster. There is a Court of Spirit and it is usually the court of last resort. Will we choose it?


“Gratitude and Indifference – Love or Deification?”

Page 320 — Pray that Christian Scientists cannot be handled by silent aggressive arguments to forget this dear one [MBE].


Page 325 — Christian Scientists must know scientifically that healing cannot be difficult or lost when we retain the vision of gratitude for the one who made each and every Christianly scientific healing possible…..Christian Scientists are alert to the seducing claims of the enemy, and the love we have for our Leader will not allow these errors to be propagated. We can see why she stated, “All the people need in order to love and adopt Christian Science, is a true sense of its founder. In proportion as they have found it, will our Cause advance.” (WKMBE Vol. I, p.40 emphasis added)


Page 327 — Pray to know that Christian Scientists in positions of trust cannot be handled by projected mental arguments and thus made to diminish their regard for their Leader.


Page 339 — Sue Harper Mims, CSD: Mrs. Mims stated to Mrs. Eddy that she was “God’s messenger today.” She also said, “There is not a day of my life that I do not declare at least once, often twice, that malicious animal magnetism cannot blind me to her. We must fix our gaze on Principle, think of God, and yet we must recognize who she is.” (WKMBE Vol. II, p.55)

Socialism, Communism, and Christian Science

The plight of American freedom, and particularly religious freedom, can be explained through an understanding of government. When a government has become too large it takes on added responsibility. This responsibility is given up to a government by citizens unaware of their own responsibilities regarding the practice of self-government. A government then becomes top heavy and grows without limit, and the rights which were originally retained by an individual are now residing with the state. Therefore, if a man thinks he has a right to go down the street to church or to study in the manner he sees fit, he must first realize that this activity comes under the jurisdiction of the state. The state will then determine if it is necessary and proper for him to do these things. Putting it bluntly, many people have taken their liberties for granted, and have not guarded them, and at present are in danger of losing them altogether.

This is no idle statement. If we look at the growth of government in the last forty years we can see that it is not a very pretty picture. The great lust for power by men must be handled by individuals taking the initiative to actively demonstrate self-government. Only in this manner is government demonstrated from a subjective standpoint. Only then will the individual see that he is the basis of government in this country. Mary Baker Eddy says, page 80 of Miscellaneous Writings, “Unconstitutional and unjust coercive legislation and laws, infringing individual rights, must be ‘of few days and full of trouble.’ The vox populi, through the providence of God, promotes and impels all true reform; and, at the best time, will redress wrongs and rectify injustice. Tyranny can thrive but feebly under our Government. God reigns, and will ‘turn and overturn’ until right is found supreme.”

Our government has had many changes since Mrs. Eddy was here. We no longer have the Constitutional Republic which our founding fathers established. This country has degenerated into a system of “majority rule.” All action is taken by the consent of the majority with a complete disregard of individual rights. So, today tyranny can thrive under our government because our government has been changed to such a degree that this is possible. The grab for political power at the present time is just an indication of future attempts on a larger scale. If Christian Scientists do not understand our form of government and protect it, mankind will not have Christian Science in the next century! We fail to recognize the error that confronts us. Mrs. Eddy says, (Miscellany 210), “Certain individuals entertain the notion that Christian Science Mind-healing should be two-sided, and only denounce error in general,– saying nothing, in particular, of error that is damning men. They are sticklers for a false, convenient peace, straining at gnats and swallowing camels. The unseen wrong to individuals and society they are too cowardly, too ignorant, or too wicked to uncover, and excuse themselves by denying that this evil exists.”

The errors of this age manifest in faulty political doctrine do not necessarily come from other lands. The evils of human nature do not pick or choose where they will germinate. The individual that accepts them is a party to the crime. These errors would never be manifest in America if thought was not accepting them. The errors of mortal mind manifest as communism and socialism are just modern-day Romanism in different forms attempting to worm their way into consciousness, and it is in consciousness that they are corrected. It is not a problem “out there” to be handled by government officials or someone else. It is your demonstration because the evil is presenting itself to your thought. If an individual is in an unsettled state of mind and his thought is the point of attack for malicious minds, he will either succumb to the suggestiveness of the attack or he will gain strength from it and rise higher. If he does go higher he will have lived up to his highest sense of right. If a country is the point of attack by malicious minds because it denies them absolute control, it too gains from the experience if it rises higher by demonstrating fully its high ideals or basic laws. There is no outside problem attacking us, or our country. We know that problem is suggestion only, and that if we accept it in our thinking we give it power, and if we reject it and demonstrate the truth, we have won the battle. This is subjective demonstration.

Americans would never give up their rights all at one time. They would have to lose them bit by bit before anyone could ever attempt to control this country. Today Americans are gradually giving up their rights to a centralized government. They are destroying their own liberty and this is socialism. It tends to take away rights through a slow process until you wake up one morning without owning your house, car, furniture, your church building or your business. You will be working for the government. If you think this is funny look at yourself or your neighbors and see just how much you really own. How much do you participate in the workings of your city, county, state, and national government? I dare say that these individuals are few and far between. How many of you understand our economic system? You say it is not necessary because I am a Christian Scientist. Well, if you say this you are a moral idiot! You need to handle malicious animal magnetism because it is certainly handling you.

Mrs. Eddy says, “Certain elements in human nature would undermine the civic, social, and religious rights and laws of nations and peoples, striking at liberty, human rights, and self-government– and this, too, in the name of God, justice, and humanity!” (Message for 1900 by Mary Baker Eddy, page 10) So you see we do have problems to handle. We must understand how this evil in human nature is attempting to undermine our civic, social, and religious rights, our laws and liberties. This was written in 1900 at the turn of the century. Sixty-four years have gone by since then. Look around you and try to discern for yourself the infringement upon your rights. If you cannot determine them, you had better start reading, and fast! The following is the plan of these malicious minds:

  1. To destroy deep religious faith.
  2. To confuse and blur the understanding of the basic principles upon which our country was founded and of the men who founded these principles.
  3. Completely annihilate confidence in the United States and in its way of life.
  4. Control agriculture, housing, destroy financial policies, labor, and business.

The foregoing is not a guess. These are the plans of an organization in this country. This comes from them, it is not my own.

We must remember that a government that is big enough to do everything for us is also big enough to take everything away from us. Communism and socialism are the dark ideas which declare, “I want the crown but not the cross.” We must see a government of divine action manifest and not one of material reaction.

Mrs. Eddy says, “The eastern empires and nations owe their false government to the misconceptions of Deity there prevalent.” (Science and Health, page 94) If this is true, then the false sense of government masquerading as our Republic is a false sense or a false concept of Deity prevalent in the United States. The revolution in the United States which had a great deal to do with the forming of our government was Christian. Today, we too must realize that we are part of a revolution. It is the most radical revolution mankind has ever witnessed. Jesus Christ was a revolutionist, he was a rebel, and he was executed as an insurrectionist. He was considered dangerous to the well-being of the rulers. We are too complacent when we come to an honest appraisal of the Master. He was meek and loving, and very gentle. But, he brought down kingdoms with just a few words, and his words are still doing it. Mary Baker Eddy was not just a kindly old lady. She was dynamic! She is the Leader of the most revolutionary movement in the world today. If we would follow their examples we must become extreme in our convictions. We are not to water them down with apathy and neglect, complacency or appeasement. We stand for the highest Law. This Law must permeate all society. It must take the sting away from the evil ones and make them harmless. It must be the call to return to greatness. It is a call to re-establish all the good things that made this country so great, and it is a call to destroy those things which tend to degenerate our country.

Dialectical materialism claims that there is nothing but matter. It claims that matter is positive proof of the universe and that is enough. It considers the facts of the universe to be sufficiently explained by the existence and nature of matter. In other words, mortal mind is given full sway. If this is true, then man has nothing noble to work for. He has no need for self-government because there is no reward. Complete dependency is upon the state and nothing else. What I am trying to get at is this: the ideas of socialism and communism are materialistic and are diametrically opposed to Christian Science. They attempt to subjugate men and nations through totalitarianism. It is the authoritarianism of mortal man as opposed to Law. It is not a system for the advancement of mankind, but it is a system to control mankind under the rule of a few who think themselves much more intelligent than anyone else. In other words, you are too stupid to rule yourself and therefore you must have someone else, preferably the state, take care of you.

Fabian socialism is a brand of socialism which comes from the shores of England. The word Fabian gives it a different meaning because of the different approach they take to the world’s political and economic problems. It is named after the Roman general Quintas Fabius Maximus, which means delayer. He avoided decisive contests in the defense of Rome against Hannibal; hence it means to wear down gradually. It was organized in England in 1884 to spread socialistic principles gradually. Their textbooks are read in most of our universities and colleges, and a great many of our politicians adhere to their policies of economics in government. This is why our freedoms are being eroded away gradually without notice.

Principle interprets the universe and man, not dialectical materialism. Ours is the subjective kingdom of the Father-Mother. It is not ruled by man. The kingdom of mortal mind is attempting to destroy the kingdom of God upon earth, and this is impossible. It is aggressive and seeks to force itself upon a world that is waking from its deep slumber. As Christian Scientists we must demonstrate this kingdom of heaven within us more than ever before. We cannot unite with communists or communism in any world government or any other way. One must go. We cannot live together. There is no peaceful coexistence between error and Truth.

Christian Science has loosed thoughts’ fetters to bring forth the greatest scientific advancement the world has ever seen. Communism is attempting to use the fruits of Christian Science to destroy the very nation that brought it forth. The correct sense of Science must be manifest in material science. Material science cannot be used for destructive purposes if Christian Scientists keep that tendency of error in check and realize that all true science belongs with Christianity. It is only the attempt of mortal mind to pull the Science from the Christian, and at the same time annihilate the Christian through the false sense of science.

The crowning event of history is the discovery of Christian Science and not the communist revolution. God is working his purpose out for men and nations and we must let Him shine through every thought and deed. Demonstration is the need of the hour.

The United States of America — The Ark and Cradle of Christian Science

Moses’s simple ark of bulrushes and Christ Jesus’ cradle in the manger, symbolize the protection given the pure and humble Christ-like thought. The protection afforded by the cradle and ark enabled the child-like thought to grow into the fullness of the stature of the Christ. This was the ushering forth of the perfect idea. Moses and Jesus were sheltered by humble environments which protected the eventful births. In both instances the maliciousness of mortal mind sought out the human herald in an attempt to destroy the Christ which was to be brought forth. Jesus and Moses were to become such great leaders of men that even before they were born, malicious animal magnetism was conniving means and methods to rid the world of their usefulness and examples. However, mortal mind was not to have its way. God protects that which serves His purpose.

In every era there is always one individual who is nearer to the fullness of the Christ-like love. Through that individual the Truth speaks most plainly to that age. This great fact is true of nations as well, for one nation must always express more of the perfect Principle than do the neighboring nations. Does it seem so irregular and unnatural that Christian Science should be discovered in a country whose beginnings were established upon the humble Christ-like purity of infinite Principle, Love? When we understand this, then we can perceive that the Constitution and Declaration of Independence are the ark and cradle of the impersonal Christ which, manifested as a nation, is America. This is why Mrs. Eddy speaks about believing strictly in the Monroe Doctrine and the Constitution.

Christian Science develops in other countries too, but it could only have been discovered in America, because America was the only nation which would protect the Babe of Christian healing. Remember, it was the two wings of the eagle, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, which took the woman, Mary Baker Eddy, into the wilderness to bring forth her discovery. Therefore Christian Science was not discovered in Russia, China, Germany, England or Africa. The impersonal Christ idea must have an impersonal Christ principle to protect it. Without it, mortal passions would soon blot out the light of Truth. The Constitution and Declaration of Independence are the impersonal ark protecting the impersonal Christ or Christian Science.

The so called scholarly and erudite nations of the world scoffed at the impertinence or insurrection, as some of them saw it, of America’s humble beginnings. Kings, potentates, priests and pope saw its bright promise and sought to destroy it and still do. No nation can now scoff at it for the ideas brought forth, for the establishment of our Nation have been tested and found true.

No American can ever misconstrue or doubt the principles and truths for which the Founding Fathers fought, and for the ideas and purposes they held most dear in their hearts. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 176 of Miscellaneous Writings: “When first the Pilgrims planted their feet on Plymouth Rock, frozen ritual and creed should forever have melted away in the fire of love which came down from heaven. The Pilgrims came to establish a nation in true freedom, in the rights of conscience.” Also on line 18 of the same page, she says: “to build upon the rock of Christ.” Christian Science had a meek and humble entry into this world, and it was this meekness which exalts it. This humbleness will enable Christian Science to inherit the earth, not in cowardly acts of submission and conciliation to error, but by destroying error with the strength of Mind. True meekness will not allow error to trample upon it or degrade its purposes. America was the only nation whose founding was on spiritual principles. It is the nearest concept of the national idea to Mind, and being so close, it must remain separate from “entangling alliances” as Washington said, just as a good Christian Scientist would not marry a good Roman Catholic.

“The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: It is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” Is not America a marvelous sight to the eyes? Has she not developed because her basis is Christianity? In the foregoing quoted statement we find a principle that can be applied to all activities that build upon the Christ. It underlies all true foundations. Then this statement holds true for our nation.

In the Christian Science Sentinel of October 3, 1936, the following statements are made: “In the early laws framed by the Massachusetts General Court, the Bible is constantly cited as the authority. In 1741 John Cotton, the greatest of the first generation of New England preachers, drew up a proposed code of laws for Massachusetts in which marginal references to the Bible are given in support of each of the suggested laws. When the New Haven Colony was formed in 1639, all the free planters, we are told, assembled to consult about settling civil government, and the first question was: ‘Whether the Scripture do hold forth a perfect rule for the direction and government of all men in all duties which they are to perform to God and men as well as in the government of families and commonwealth as in matters of the Church.’ This was answered in the affirmative, and it was voted unanimously that ‘the Word of God shall be the rule to be attended unto in ordering the affairs in government in this plantation.” The Christian idea of man was accepted as a legitimate building block for man’s government.

The pagan idea of man asserts that man is created for the State and for its use alone. His worth is measured according to his usefulness to the State; whereas the Christian idea of man states that his government is brought forth for his use and God’s glory. He controls it. It is brought forth and created solely for his protection, and he has a right to dictate its proceedings in accord with law. The State is not to be used as an instrument of those inflamed with mad ambition. No crown, no royal head, centralized power, socialism, communism or tyranny or any kind can dictate to the individual, for they are the anti-Christ.

When this idea was promulgated by the greatest thinkers of early America and accepted by its inhabitants as truth, a Nation was brought forth to protect mankind’s noblest desire – freedom in the choice of government and religion. This idea brought forth the government necessary for the protection and inception of Christian Science. The Christian idea for man is set forth in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence. These documents embody the concepts of liberty our Founding Fathers derived from constant study of the Bible. Impersonal law became the protection of all Americans and eventually enabled the babe of Christian healing its birth in our blessed Nation.

On page 200 of Miscellany, Mrs. Eddy says: “Religious liberty and individual rights under the Constitution of our nation are rapidly advancing, avowing and consolidating the genius of Christian Science.” If Mrs. Eddy accords to the Constitution such importance, it should be important for her students to understand its history, its spirit and provisions. No other form of government has been accorded this recognition. We can accurately assume that Christian Science would only grow while the Constitution was intact. It is not growing. Our government has become centralized as the Eastern empires and nations. She knew our Textbook was for the use of individuals the world over. Unless it is a guide for the rest of the world and for Americans of future generations, to speak of our government in this manner, it would have been considered an affront to Christian Scientists in other lands. The genius of Christian Science can be destroyed when centralization creeps into our form of government. It is the destruction of our protection. It is the pagan idea of man being brought forth once again to destroy the good which has already been established. The protective purity of the cradle and the conscious safety of the ark must be accepted and understood before we can bring God’s kingdom to earth. This is “the kingdom within”, individual worth. A centralized government suppresses this individual kingdom and promotes the steady growth of that kingdom without, or centralized government. Pray for the protection and the reinstatement of the principles of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

The American system of republican government, as the impersonal cradle of the impersonal Christ Science, must be understood by Christian Scientists. “Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” It is obvious that unless a nation expresses the Christ it cannot be an example and lead unto heavenward. It cannot bring God’s kingdom to earth. Our nation must return to its child-like innocence before it can point the way nationally to salvation. We must guard jealously that which constitutes and protects the purity of the Christ in this age. We must strive to reveal the cradle-thought, then the original purity and protective nature of the ark and cradle will be seen and demonstrated. We must see our primitive and ultimate nature in Christ. It naturally follows that we must understand America’s rich history and see the purity that brought her forth, or we cannot see the importance of America today. If we no longer understand the cradle-thought, we lose the babe. This will occur when the babe is unprotected because of indifference or ignorance. If we lose sight of the original meaning of America as the cradle of Christian Science, we lose the babe of Christ healing, for it is no longer protected in our human experience. Centralized government is the enemy of Christian Science. It denies the freedom that brought forth Christian Science. Error grows malicious in its assaults upon freedom when we give up our claim to freedom, and then error struggles to gain complete control. An understanding of our heritage as individuals and as a nation is paramount to survival. Christian Science will not survive in a socialistic welfare state. 

The ark in the bulrushes and the cradle in the manger brought forth unprecedented thought and activity, some of the most fearless and enlightening the world has ever witnessed. Jesus and Moses were witnessing to God’s government. No one man, men or organizations could destroy the protection of the ark and cradle without first changing our form of government.

America is wholly unique. In a letter to Mrs. William P. McKinley, wife of the President, March 30, 1898, Mrs. Eddy said in speaking of Cuba: “The question is grave – does God require the best government on earth to disturb its peace by war to give Cuba her independence when other nations offer no help? Foreign nations are allied but the United States stands alone in her glory.” Mrs. Eddy knew that glorious America’s purpose could be accomplished in her own – never allied with foreign nations. Mrs. Eddy believed “strictly in the Monroe Doctrine” and our “Constitution”. Can we enter a world government if we stand alone in “our glory”? Jesus put aside his swaddling clothes (material sense of birth) in the sepulchre. When will we as a nation? Must we as a nation go to what he did to overcome the claims of tyranny? Christian Scientists must lift on high the true birth of this nation or we will!

The great Christian luminaries of America, such as Washington, Adams and Lincoln, etc., were preparing and readying the manger – the world’s thinking, and the courts and hierarchies, for the revelation of Christian Science. They gathered the bulrushes and pitched the ark. They cut the wood and fashioned the cradle. Today, Americans and Christian Scientists in particular, are asleep in the cradle. They are not growing. They are being tossed to and fro in the ark without calming the waters and are being lost in the bulrushes. The ark has many holes in it and is ready to sink.   

On page 10 of Pulpit and Press, Mrs. Eddy says: “Rome’s fallen fanes and silent Aventine is glory’s tomb; her pomp and power lie low in dust. Our land, more favored, had its Pilgrim Fathers. On shores of solitude, at Plymouth Rock, they planted a nation’s heart, – the rights of conscience, imperishable glory. No dream of avarice or ambition broke their exalted purpose; theirs was the wish to reign in hope’s reality – the realm of Love.” It is avarice and “mad ambition” that centralizes government. It comes from a lack of love – the hatred of self and mankind.

The Christ, as has been said, comes through those individuals with the consciousness clear enough to perceive its message, and listen for guidance. The less opaque object will enable more light to be diffused through it than the more opaque object. History furnishes us proof of this. We have the example of Moses and the prophets, Jesus, the disciples, the apostles, Wycliffe, Locke, Luther, Calvin and many more luminaries up to the settling of the New England shores. These individuals brought forth more of the Christian idea of man and government, therefore, their work and examples are invaluable as stepping stones to the revelation of divine Mind. The crowning event of history became manifest when God’s womanhood could be established and protected. Then and only then was Christian Science discovered. The lodestar which brought the shepherds to the manger, and which enabled the Founding Fathers to establish a Christian form of government, was the same star which enabled Mary Baker Eddy to discover Christian Science. It was the Bible, “the Word, the polar magnet of Revelation.” 

“Come out from among them and be ye separate” must be America realizing the importance of its national destiny. If we continue to think of America as just another nation in the world, we have already added to the danger confronting our demonstration. This lethargic thought will destroy America and Christian Science with it. Look in the Christian Science Journal and see if you can find many Christian Science churches in any of the communistic countries? This tells the story quite clearly. The birthplace of Christian Science should be respected as unique, not only by Americans, but by all mankind. We know it will be in the near future if Christian Scientists rally to their country’s defense. We have religious freedom because we are a Christian Nation, and many other parts of the globe have it only because America is here. If America were not here to stand, religious freedom would be a nonentity. All is Principle and Principle expressed nationally is the United States of America. We can never let America become “second rate” because America expresses the highest sense of the national aspects of Principle in this age.

Patriotism is the love of Principle because it loves what He has provided for the protection of His children. America must stand as an example to the world. America cannot be amalgamated with other nations. America and Christian Science must lift their neighbors up to their standards of other nations and religions. America and Christian Science are as unique as roses in a garden of bachelor buttons. Mortal mind would have us believe America is the same as other nations. In this way America would have no unique purpose, nor any destiny. Mortal mind would also relish the idea of Mary Baker Eddy as being thought of as a little old grey-haired lady, or of Jesus as just another prophet, or Moses as just another man among many. However, we know each is unique and fulfills a part of God’s infinite plan. They all have a place in God’s disposal of events, for their demonstrations are still with us. 

More constructive thinking has been produced in America’s history than in all other combined centuries of the human story. It might also be noted that more has been done in the least amount of time.

Dr. Jedediah Morse wrote: “Our dangers are of two kinds; those which affect our religion and those which affect our government. They are, however, so closely allied, that they cannot with propriety, be separated. The foundations which support the interests of Christianity are also necessary to support a free and equal government like our own. In all those countries where there is little or no religion, or a very gross and corrupt one, as in Mohammedan and pagan countries, there you will find, with scarcely a single exception, arbitrary and tyrannical governments, gross ignorance and wickedness, and deplorable wretchedness among the people. To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoy. In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation, either through unbelief, or the corruption of its doctrines, or the neglect of its institutions; in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom, and approximate the miseries of complete despotism. I hold this to be truth confirmed by experience. if so, it follows, that all efforts made to destroy the foundations of our holy religion ultimately tend to the subversion also of our political freedom and happiness. Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all the blessings which flow from them, must fall with them.” The administration of our Republic must not be thought of in a casual or apathetic manner, for our government insures that the freedom of religion will continue to be preserved without being violated as long as the principles embodied in our national framework remain. It might be pointed out that almost all of them have already been altered. This is an attack on Christian Science. 

The science of constitutional government must be understood by all Christian Scientists, for it is based upon principle, law. A government of law guarantees that man is not subject to the whims, machinations or personal caprice of men or their type of relative thinking. Law is government – not oppressive measures of gradual centralization.

Mrs. Eddy states on page 94 of Science and Health: “The Eastern empires and nations owe their false government to the misconception of Deity there prevalent.” Therefore, it is also true that America owes her form of government to the correct concept of Deity. If this is the case, Christian Scientists had better stand up and be counted because America has been following the political practices of the Eastern empires during the past 45 years. 

The pagan thought of hierarchy should never have a place in the political structure of America. It is as foreign to our political framework and institutions, as error is to Truth. We cannot let our freedom erode away.

There are two forms of revolutions, although we commonly think of revolution in connection with bloodshed and violence. But it can be more subtle because the principles of a cause, people or government are broken down “bit by bit” until there is no longer a vestige of principle worth acknowledging. This same form of revolution took place when Constantine declared himself the head of the church. He could never have obtained control of the church or maintained it had the church not already decayed sufficiently for his takeover. The same can be said of Rome. It was internal decay that was its downfall, and which eventually led to its destruction by the Huns and Vandals. Someone once said that it was like an egg that had its insides rotten away. Then all that was needed for destruction was for the egg to be crushed. Why shouldn’t it be? What purpose does a hollow egg serve? 

The checks and balances, separation of powers, the dual form of government (national and local government), and their various spheres of action, limited powers, and representative government, are the beneficial results of Christianity applied to government. The Founding Fathers knew human nature and its greed for power, so they established a government of law with limitations and checks upon mortal impulses. The Christ idea could then grow rather than be buried again beneath the rubble of oppressive tyrannies. We hear much about streamlining government and making it more effective. However, if the Truth were known, it is a few men seeking to destroy the checks and balances which would enable them to grab power. We must be very grateful for our form of government for there are those who would destroy our institutions to gratify their own passions and greed. This is the anti-Christ in its most aggressive, yet most subtle form. We do not cast aside moral standards and laws for the sake of expediency. Moral decay cannot be forced upon us if we are alert.

Christian Science is built upon the rock of Truth, as is our beloved nation. No ecclesiastical or political despotism can dwell in the shadow of this great rock until we lose sight of the rock’s significance. The attempt of despotic alliances and totalitarian governments to subjugate individuals and nations into a regimented mass destroys individuality and makes man subservient to mortal planning and will power. Then man will no longer have a right to determine his own identity. It will be decided for him. Human planning must never subvert the Christ-like revelation, for it cannot take its place. An individual’s freedom is based upon a knowledge of God and His government as manifest in our human experience.

Mrs. Eddy says on page 227 of Science and Health: “Discerning the rights of man, we cannot fail to foresee the doom of all oppression.” Oppression is that which seeks to captivate and impose burdens upon, especially those that are free. Error’s nature is oppressive in all its forms. Independence and liberty without reason and self-government force us to become pawns upon the gaming table of malicious hoaxers whether they are called friends or enemies, relatives or neighbors, governors, priests, presidents, popes, scholars, teachers or professors. Malicious animal magnetism will always find avenues to work through us and usually in the most unsuspected areas.

Our nation is fast destroying its armaments because Christian Scientists are fast letting down their arguments against the evils confronting our nation. Our nation is fast becoming dictatorial and centralized because Christian Scientists are relying on an external God (practitioner) instead of the subjective demonstration of oneness. There is too little self-government in the Christian Science Movement. Americans are lethargic and listless because Christian Scientists are lethargic and listless about our Nation’s divine purpose. Our Nation is languishing in opulence and ease because Christian Scientists are using Science for pleasure in matter instead of for a destruction of materiality. Our Nation’s economy is bankrupt because her people are spiritually bankrupt and Christian Scientists talk of the letter without corresponding demonstrations. Inflated money is inflated talk, nothing to back it up. Christian Science through Christian Scientists must be guiding this Nation because our mental work should be leavening the corrupt influences and erroneous practices of its citizens and officials and destroying their false power. The proper mental work is not being done for our beloved Nation.

Mary Baker Eddy directed that the Concord, New Hampshire Church of Christ, Scientist, should ring its bells every Thanksgiving, every Christmas and every Fourth of July – Thanksgiving for the beautiful Nation which is animated by the ark and the cradle; Christmas bells ring out to proclaim the birth of the human herald whose teachings and principles are woven into the ark and cradle; Fourth of July bells ring out for the liberty brought forth by the ark and cradle, a tribute to those brave and patriotic gentlemen of the 1700’s who brought this Nation to the door of Christian Science. 

God clearly stated in the Bible that Israel would be named a new name in the latter days. Only one nation has fulfilled the Biblical promises that would follow that nation – America. America remained waiting until a Christian people were ready to occupy her and remained a refuge for them until millions of Christians were ready to make her a Christian nation. It stands today for a Christianly scientific people to rescue her from the jealousy of one-world government. There are many similarities between ancient Israel and the United States. It is as if history were repeating itself.

  1. The Israelites crossed the sea to get rid of bondage as did the Christians coming to America. 
  2. At the destruction of the Egyptian tyrant’s forces, Israel decreed general thanksgiving to God. When the modern Pharaoh was defeated, a general Thanksgiving was decreed by Congress.
  3. It is said that the number of Israelites escaping from bondage were 3,000,000 and the number of people in the revolution colonies in 1776 was about 3,000,000.
  4. The sea was frozen when the Israelites reached the safe side, and the Pilgrim Fathers found a frozen sea and snow covered shore.
  5. Israelites were organized as a confederacy of 13 tribes and the 13 colonies providentially organized into a Christian confederacy.
  6. The Israelite Confederacy was organized into a “more perfect union” after the exodus by adopting a written democratic constitution, and so was ours.
  7. The Israelite’s constitution was submitted to the tribes for ratification, so was ours to the colonies.
  8. Our two countries are known to be the only two nations to have adopted written constitutions at their birth prior to 1776.
  9. Church and state were disunited by the Israelite’s constitution and placed in the relation of associates. The church was debarred as a church from exercising direct control in civil affairs and so, too, in the U.S. Constitution.
  10. The Israelite was responsible only to God and to the ecclesiastical law of the church, and was in no way responsible to civil authority for his spiritual conduct.
  11. Political offices of the Israelites were elective, so are ours.
  12. The people of Israel chose God as their King and renounced allegiance to all other monarchs by acclamation, and so do the people of the United States.
  13. The Israelites’ constitution forbids foreigners from ever becoming supreme magistrates, and so does ours. 
  14. The Israelites’ constitution provided for the naturalization of foreigners, and so does ours. 
  15. The Israelite nation fell when they yelled “Nay we will have a king over us.” We will too if we continue to deny God as our King and Christ as the head of all principality and power.

Mrs. Eddy says: “But if our nation’s rights or honor were seized, every citizen would be a soldier and woman would be armed with power girt for the hour.” (Miscellany 277:22) If Mrs. Eddy meant metaphysically girting, she would have said men and women, but this statement denotes an unusual position for women for such a time. This would mean being armed with weapons of war as well as Truth. Women would not be spared the necessity of fighting physically as well as mentally if our nation were seized by armed intruders. Mrs. Eddy knows the importance of the ark and the cradle! Evidently she saw the future of our nation.

In the Manual of the Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy says: “The chief cornerstone whereof is, that Christian Science, as taught and demonstrated by our Master, casts out error, heals the sick, and restores the lost Israel: for the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner.” Christian Science is restoring the literal sense of Israel manifest as a nation, or America, for the spiritual Israel could never be spoken of by Mrs. Eddy as being lost. Mrs. Eddy recognized America as the country, which more closely than all others, carries the national banner of spiritual Israel. Christian Science reveals this to be so, and Christian Scientists must see that it is done. The spiritual must be manifested to the eyes, or the spiritual cannot be appreciated or accepted. In her poem to Great Britain, Mrs. Eddy says:

“Lord of the main and manor!
Thy palm, in ancient day,
Didst rock the country’s cradle
That wakes thy laureate’s lay.”

In other words, England’s blessings will come when America is seen to have a divine purpose. All mankind will be blessed with this recognition of America as the national herald of Truth. The cradle has the laureates (Christian Science) in it. The whole poem is timely. Those who take the time to study it will derive a great deal of inspiration from it.

As Ephraim, the younger son of Joseph, was given the blessing of the older son, Manasseh, so was America given the blessing over the older Great Britain, though both share in the blessing, for both are brothers of “the self-same spirit”.

The spirituality of this nation was able to bring forth Mary Baker Eddy, and through her we were given Christian Science, the impersonal Christ idea. The country which enabled God’s womanhood to be revealed and protected was America. It is America which has Christian Science in its keeping today.

The Master’s parable of The Prodigal Son foretold the reception Truth would have in this age. It quite closely resembles the state of affairs in our Nation. It seems that we are just about ready to get out of the dirt and see what our rich heritage is, and stop this ridiculous maelstrom called “riotous living”. America must return to the house of her Father. She must return to the cradle and ark for there and only there is her destiny protected. Only through adherence to her original compacts – the ark and the cradle – can she survive. Man can only see perfection when he beholds the original and casts away the counterfeit. 

All the metaphysical work we do for our Nation will be useless unless we repair the badly damaged ark and cradle. Its purpose has been mistreated and abused by petty politicians, vicious opportunists, those mad with ambition, pseudo-intellectuals, and those self-acknowledged destroyers of Christianity. They are destroying the ark and cradle, some ignorantly and some with malicious intent. Our mental work must stop this erosion immediately. “Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (II Cor. 3:17)

Chemicalization and Tribulation

Written in December 1967 by

“When the final physical and moral effects of Christian Science are fully apprehended, the conflict between truth and error, understanding and belief, Science and material sense, foreshadowed by the prophets and inaugurated by Jesus, will cease, and spiritual harmony reign.” (S&H p. 288:10)

Mary Baker Eddy says, “Christian Science and the senses are at war. It is a revolutionary struggle. We already have had two in this nation; and they began and ended in a contest for the true idea, for human liberty and rights. Now cometh a third struggle; for the freedom of health, holiness, and the attainment of heaven.” (Mis. p. 101:8) Mrs. Eddy is implying that the third struggle will also take place in America. Do not underestimate the importance of our Nation.

What appears to mortal sense as tribulation in any form is error’s attempt to thwart man’s demonstration Godward. This tribulation comes from man’s attempt to demonstrate perfection and oneness with God. This is the chemicalizing process which eventually brings forth the ultimate perfection when deep-rooted errors are eradicated from thought. Sinful, pleasurable sense will not give up its throne without a struggle. Mortal sins are manifested in many complex ways and we must detect their patterns of movement and influence and root them out. False government, false religion, false science, false economics and sin manifested in many other wicked forms are being destroyed in this age. This evil is but good appearing. The more evil becomes apparent to sense, the more powerful and wonderful the good that is coming to the surface. As Truth is bringing evil to the surface of mortal mind to be seen, mortal sense is being afflicted and pressed to give up its false claims. This occasions what the mortal senses call suffering, but we know that it is only mortal sense and, therefore, is nothing pretending to be something. This is a hint for us to get out of the mortal sense of things and gently move into Spirit. This chemicalization process is individual and subjective. It is our demonstration of oneness. It is a time to rejoice, not to lament. The errors that are being presented to mortal mind’s view, and only to mortal mind’s view, are not known to God. God knows nothing of affliction and tribulation.

The chemicalizing process is a very interesting study in Science. If we carefully watch mortal mind we can see how it is attempting to circumvent the final acceptance of Science. In the search for Truth, many have come to the point of recognizing no Truth. Others are intent upon satiating their sensual mentality. All of this has its basis in a lack of Principle which underlies our experience. Without Principle there is a lack of self-control, or self-government. Therefore, there is no restraint and mortal man rebels against everything. But what is really going on? It is nothing more nor less than malicious animal magnetism using mortal man in the attempt to stop the advancing Christ idea. The unlimited growth of government signals a lack of restraint, self-control, and self-government. A crime rate rising six times the rate of the population growth is a lack of self-restraint, self-control, and self-government. Anyone watching the latest dance crazes can detect a lack of self-control, unbridled emotions and a lack of self-restraint. And do not the music field, the clothes and art fields reflect this same error, and in growing form? And what of the movies and magazines? The idea in all of these is to follow the crowd and disdain individuality. The idea is for you not to think for yourself. These attacks upon society are attacks on our nation and religion. It is the designing influence of animal magnetism attempting to pattern a web of inconsistency, sensuality, and lethargy. Now the truth about these things is that Truth is appearing and animal magnetism is attempting to counterfeit the true sense that is coming to the light.

Is not a mannish woman and an effeminate man a direct reversal of Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy’s demonstrations of true manhood and true womanhood? Handle these errors. Mortal man is being handled in every way possible in the attempt to circumvent Truth. Every new “kick” is being explored. Christian Scientists must show the Way and stop the criminal element from manipulating mankind. When mankind – and America in particular – begins to awaken, there will be violence to handle and we must understand its workings in order to handle it.

Mrs. Eddy says, “What I term chemicalization is the upheaval produced when immortal Truth is destroying erroneous mortal belief. Mental chemicalization brings sin and sickness to the surface, forcing impurities to pass away, as is the case with a fermenting fluid.” (S&H p. 401:16) This is our work then, to recognize the sins and sicknesses being brought to the surface of mortal consciousness so that they can be destroyed by Truth. To claim peace in your ivory tower while the world is in the process of fusion is extremely dangerous. The world is awaiting the second death that will have no power. Are you seeing ultimate destruction or ultimate perfection?

The latent tendencies of mortal mind are appearing in the errors of this age; therefore, we must be alert to see mortal mind at work and, thereby, thwart its attempts to manifest itself in the events of this age. It is only animal magnetism seeking an object or event to work through. All of the wickedness, immorality, licentiousness and power-grabbing in the world today is mortal mind’s one last surfacing, attempting to gain power and attraction for itself. It is struggling to be something that it can never attain.

“Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding,” says Mrs. Eddy. (S&H p. 96:21) This is the truth and cannot be reversed. Christian Science brings stability and the flux and flow of hatred is destroyed by stable Principle.

This tremendous chemicalization has begun with the leaven of “The Woman,” Mary Baker Eddy, and will continue until Christian Scientists demonstrate individual and universal perfection and it is found that Principle is the basis for all spheres of activity. There is racial conflict and violence because the true concept of race is being shown to mankind. We must handle the resistance to God’s race. As Christian Scientists we know that the reversal of the highest state of consciousness moves error to a change of base. Therefore, it is our responsibility to destroy the errors coming to the surface of mortal mind. We must handle the suggestions of animal magnetism before they can be accepted and acted upon by the thinking of mankind.

The opposing force of God’s government is oppressive and overbearing totalitarianism with its various degrees of centralization. The chemicalization process of Truth is destroying the false concept of government and the false sense of man that this government thrives upon. False government cannot thwart the heavenly aspirations of man by and through its cruel mercies. Those aware of false government’s attempt to subject mankind, are mentally destroying it for what it is – the destruction of man’s oneness with God, that claims there is a power apart from God able to clothe and feed man. It is animal magnetism working through mortal channels, namely, Communism, Socialism, Romanism, and Zionism, in an attempt to accomplish its purposes for the destruction of good. The tribulation brought by malicious animal magnetism in this sphere is manifested in innumerable errors. It is bringing a gradual loss of all freedoms because it imposes the restrictions of greed, mad ambition, subjugation, hatred and lethargy on mankind. Error will always find channels to work through unless we purify these channels and destroy animal magnetism’s influence.

The labor field is also being touched by chemicalization. The inflationary spiral precipitated by wages demanded by unions is an attempt of error to destroy the finest system of economics, that of capitalism. “A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.” It is fear of honest competition that denies incentive and promotes neglect. It is a protection for sloth and is another attack upon our nation.

The chemicalization process is affecting big business which has united to form monopolies to stop honest competition. It is fear of competition and love of money that motivates men. Supply and demand have become twisted. When businessmen must resort to underhanded methods to survive, our nation is in trouble; business then becomes the tool of error. It becomes a most pernicious error because it strikes at the heart of our nation’s substance. It destroys commerce, industry, money exchange and money’s value. When the law of supply and demand is destroyed, the nation’s economy is ruined and a nation is left defenseless. Price fixing instead of competition is a sure sign of weakness in our national structure. The Golden Rule must permeate business.

Medicine attempts to originate all facets of birth, growth, maturity, decay and death. The belief of medical science must be changed to include the more spiritual sense of creation. The medical field will change more rapidly when more spiritual healing is accomplished.

False business, religion, and overbearing government try to reverse and counterfeit the infinite, all-controlling, omnipotent Mind.

Religion is feeling the effect of chemicalization and is attempting to cut corners and do everything in its power to avoid the Master’s injunction to heal and cleanse humanity through spiritual means, not material means. Theologians attempt to support their personal hypotheses through a denial of Christian healing. Humility is greatly needed. Theological pride will not yield to Truth. A worldwide ecumenical council will not make their theological views valid nor protect them from honest investigation. Much is coming to the surface in theological circles that must be handled. Theology and medicine hold out till the end, but material science chemicalizes more rapidly.

These are just a few of the errors confronting this age. Chemicalization is bringing forth tribulation in every field of human endeavor, and much more can be expected as these errors are uncovered to the general public. Christian Science is rooting out the wrong in human nature and bringing forth the good which is of God. The resistance is the tribulation. We must break down that pride and stubborn resistance if we would destroy the belief of tribulation.

Mrs. Eddy’s prophecy for this century is most amazing in the light of what we are witnessing today. She says, “To my sense, the most imminent dangers confronting the coming century are: the robbing of people of life and liberty under the warrant of the Scriptures; the claims of politics and of human power, industrial slavery, and insufficient freedom of honest competition; and ritual, creed, and trusts in place of the Golden Rule, ‘Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.’” (My p.266:3) Even with this very pointed statement of Mrs. Eddy’s there are so-called Christian Scientists who will not endeavor to understand the problems that confront this age. They turn their backs upon the mortal picture without healing it. They say, “Peace, peace when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah)

The third struggle Mrs. Eddy spoke of is certainly becoming more evident to the senses with each passing day, but is it becoming more apparent through sense or through Soul? The number three signifies completeness; therefore, this is the final conflict. The first two struggles were preparing the way for the last. We can certainly see how all aspects of our being are affected by this leavening process of Truth. “Stars shine brightest in the darkest night. Grapes come not to the proof till they come to the press. Such is the condition of all God’s children; they are most triumphant when most tested, most glorious when most afflicted.” (Bogatsky)

We must endeavor to demonstrate the kingdom of heaven,– to bring His kingdom to earth. This individual kingdom must be realized within as our Master said. The problems that appear “out there,” are not “out there.” They are errors of belief working within consciousness to attempt to make you believe they are substantial and have power. These errors want you to believe there is something that is too big for you to handle. Again, it is not “out there”; you must heal it as an attack upon consciousness. It is an abomination against God and cannot be tolerated in His kingdom. If a cancer, you handle rebellion; if communism, you handle lust for power, hatred of man and God, and intellectualism.

The leaven brought forth by Mrs. Eddy must destroy all error. This leaven must complete the conflict “inaugurated by Jesus.” To think that the labor, social, religious, and economic problems of this age are for a socialistic group to solve is malicious animal magnetism putting us to sleep and keeping our thoughts closed to the problems which need to be handled. Mortal mind is telling you that you are a mortal being and can do nothing about these problems. It tells you they are separate from you and, therefore, you cannot handle them. We must see this lie for what it is and handle it. All Christian Scientists must realize and know that the Truth they are bringing forth in consciousness is leavening all situations in the world today and these errors must be specifically destroyed when they appear.

We know that the impurities in a stew come to the top while the stew is cooking. If the impurities are not skimmed off, they will burn over and put out the flame. Error must be handled. If we leave it alone, it will eventually destroy our nation and Church. Any successful attempt of mortal mind to keep us away from our mental work makes the error more difficult to handle. We do not heal something because it causes discomfort, but because it is not in accord with God’s law. The outcome of chemicalization must bring purer streams for Christian healing.

Jesus said his kingdom was not of this world, yet this did not stop him from healing mankind of their sins and of the outward manifestation of those sins. Whatever appeared to his consciousness as untrue was an offense unto God and, therefore, had to be healed. In this way he was cleansing his own nature as well as mankind’s thinking. We must work as he did, as if the future of the world depends upon our demonstration,– because it most certainly does. There are not many of us. On page 66 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says, “Through great tribulation we enter the kingdom.” To mortal sense there is tribulation but to God there is only harmony and peace. Jesus says, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” This is a wonderful statement to rely on when the days become blackened with doubt, fear, and dismay. Our dear Master is telling us his example can be followed. His Way is the only way.

The leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, Zionism and Communism and the leaven of the Woman, Mary Baker Eddy, and Christian Science, are meeting in combat. The filth and corruption brought by the false leaven is attempting to destroy the fruits of the Woman’s leaven. In this final struggle, the imperfections that have dwelt in human consciousness since the beginning of mortal history will be seen for what they are. The resistance and shock at the time of this uncovering will bring forth much indignation that, in turn, will bring forth the tribulation. At that moment, the earth will help the Woman because materiality will no longer be prized. The movements of earth, mortal mind, will destroy the so-called wealth of those attempting to control. The only protection comes from the constant awareness of Love’s allness as demonstrated in Christian Science.5 What will appear at that time to mortal sense will be destruction; but to divine Mind, the Truth will be witnessed to as the kingdom of heaven is being ushered in and realized as ever present. Mortal mind will no longer have any power because it will be seen and known as a myth. The final resistance and indignation against the secret conspirators will bring forth this “Great Tribulation.” It shall be much as Jesus tells us it will be. In Matthew we read, “And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows… And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many, and because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

It is evident that Christian Science is on the offensive and not the defensive. We could write many pages explaining this statement of Jesus’, but we already have a good indication of what he wants us to know. “The love of many shall wax cold,” and then problems occur because this cold thought engenders hatred for its betrayers. The final tribulation brought forth by chemicalization will come when Christian Science has brought enough Truth into the world to so disturb error from its base that it will come into the open to fight and will be seen and acknowledged as the erroneous concept about God, man and the universe with a completely false chemical buildup.

Jesus then bids us to watch, for he says we know not what hour this is to occur. We will not know when this purifying process will finish its course, so we must always be alert and watching to stop evil’s advancement toward destruction. This statement of the Master’s is meant for individual attention for he knew that God’s kingdom is an individual kingdom and can only be ushered in individually.

“Art thou come hither to torment us before the time?” Error does not want to be exposed. Its wicked nature dwells in secrecy and only the light of Truth as demonstrated in Christian Science can uncover it. The world is feeling the cumulative effect of Christianly scientific thinking and mortal mind is revolting against this effect. Theological dogma, medical diagnosis and practice, scientific pronouncements, and social practices are shaking under the impress of a false creation brought into the light through the demonstration of Truth. Christian Science works in every avenue of thought and action; therefore, we must handle the resistance and alarm caused by the “cumulative effect.” If we don’t handle the agitation, it will burst into flames and cause destruction.

When thought becomes clear enough to have a solid dose of truth injected into its system, there will be much indignation expressed towards many fields of endeavor that have held mankind in bondage since time began. As this age progresses, we must protect the dedicated Protestant clergy, the honorable doctors, and the honest politicians.

Mrs. Eddy says, “The hour is come. The great battle of Armageddon is upon us. The powers of evil are leagued together in secret conspiracy against the Lord and against His Christ, as expressed and operative in Christian Science. Large numbers, in desperate malice, are engaged day and night in organizing action against us. Their feeling and purpose are deadly, and they have sworn enmity against the lives of our standard bearers.” (Mis. p. 177:4) She also says Christian Scientists will hold such things in check. They are not doing so now. To stop this chemicalization process is not our aim, but to stop the evil side effects is. We are told in Isaiah 42 that God will not even stop the chemicalization: “and the smoking flax shall he not quench,” until there is no more materialistic thinking to burn.

Extremes in weather, persistent hurricanes and tornadoes, etc., are indications of the approach of this “Great Tribulation.” We will not cause the tribulation but we are producing the chemicalization which will, in turn, bring the thought of mankind toward the tribulation in order to be pushed out of sense and into Soul. We must steadfastly work to know what specific errors need to be uncovered and how to handle them for what they are; for it is only the Goliath of malicious animal magnetism in its many secret identities that we are dealing with. “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” (Matthew 24:42)

Love is the liberator.
