“Cowardice Never Conquers!”
by Mary Beth Singleterry
The battle with fear and timidity is a battle we have all had to wage in our lives at one time or another. Webster defines “timidity” as “want of courage or boldness to face danger.” I can remember in times past feeling so timid, I would pray and pray for more courage, for more confidence; and yet when confronted with an aggressive, unpleasant situation, my knees would start to shake!
One evening, I came across a quote from Mrs. Eddy which truly changed my life forever. The quote is found in her book, Collectanea (which, by the way, is for sale in our church). On page 56, Mrs. Eddy states, “Do we not all understand cowardice never conquers? To get rid of a temptation of any sort or to get out of a difficulty, we are not passive and let the wrong rule the right, but we struggle and thus conquer. We should not avoid the things that hurt us, but repeat them and meet them as their superior. Disease is a coward that leaves when you are not afraid of it.” Upon reading that statement, I felt such a feeling of calmness and relief. Yes, it is hugely important to pray; but it is also important to take action! Don’t ever let the wrong rule the right!
For example, if you are confronted with a problem at work, take time to pray and know that God has the answer. Quietly listen for that answer, and then take action, knowing that with God’s help, you will be the victor. If you become bombarded with negative suggestions that would try to paralyze and intimidate you, take action! Do not let the wrong rule the right! Mrs. Eddy has strong words for this. She states, “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.” (S&H)
As you go about your day with this new courageous YOU, difficulties will become opportunities to prove God’s presence and power. You will become a conqueror of grand proportions! Error can no longer bully you around. Remember, “The confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact that Truth is real and error is unreal. Error is a coward before Truth.” (S&H) Go get ‘em!
