God-Given Immunity

by Mary Beth Singleterry

I am so grateful for Christian Science. The past two years we have been hearing quite a bit about the pandemic and vaccines and contagion. But it is good to know in Christian Science that we do have perfect immunity, and it lies in our expression of Life, Truth and Love. The radiation of joy keeps us immune from all these false suggestions which seem to lead to physical problems when they go unhandled.

At one time in my life I suffered from colds, flu, and everything else during the winter. A practitioner, who was helping me with a cold that lasted several weeks, told me that a cold is a form of crying. I realized then that I had been depressed, and even crying at that time; and it seemed to have taken form in this cold. This left a big impression on me.

The work that we do in this Science does not just stop in a day, in a week, or even in a year; it is continuous. So, the next year, thinking about colds being a form of crying, I made sure that I was expressing much joy and gratitude and that I was not going to be depressed, whining, or full of self-pity about anything. As I expressed joy and gratitude and all the good qualities of God, I never did come down with a cold or the flu. That was a wonderful winter, and so it has been ever since.

God gives us immunity from anything that is not like Him. That is His law! In Mrs. Eddy’s wonderful article titled “Contagion,” in Miscellaneous Writings, she says, “If only the people would believe that good is more contagious than evil, since God is omnipresence, how much more certain would be the doctor’s success, and the clergyman’s conversion of sinners. And if only the pulpit would encourage faith in God in this direction, and faith in Mind over all other influences governing the receptivity of the body, theology would teach man as David taught: ‘Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.’”
