Refuse to Be Mesmerized!
by Mary Beth Singleterry
The nature of any problem is mesmeric. Whether the problem calls itself a disease, lack of supply, or trouble at work, the devil would like you to focus on it, think about it, talk about it, look at it. If it can get you to do any or all of those things, it can mesmerize you into thinking you really do have a big problem! Mrs. Eddy once told one of her students, “Error comes to you for life, and you give it all the life it has.” An important lesson I have learned is, no matter how big the problem may seem to be, no problem is too big for God! Once we get our focus off the problem and onto God, healing can take place.
There is a story written by one of the early workers, Gilbert Carpenter, in which he tells about a little boy who was injured by a train. A Christian Scientist took him home and healed him. When Mrs. Eddy heard about the case, she asked him how he treated the boy. He said, “I did not treat the boy. I only knew I could not be mesmerized.” Mrs. Eddy replied, “That is all you ever have to do.”
So, when a problem comes to you looking for life, the best thing you can do is to turn from it and start knowing the truth! And what is the truth? There is a specific statement of Truth to counteract any one of the devil’s lies. If error tells you you’re sick, you can combat it with the truth, “Man is never sick for Mind is not sick and matter cannot be.” (S&H) If error tells you you’re poor, the Bible states, “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Phil.) Knowing the truth turns your attention away from the problem to the riches our loving Father is always providing for us. When you meditate on His power and on His goodness, the Truth begins to operate in your life, and what appeared as a nasty situation dissolves into its native nothingness. The mesmerism is gone, and your whole life will change for the better!
