Quotes on Orientalism

From Watches, Prayers, and Arguments, as given by Mary Baker Eddy, page 137

Theology, spiritualism, theosophy, psychology, occultism, false philosophy, false science, mesmerism, hypnotism, oriental witchcraft, black art, black magic, astrology, palmistry, demonology, diabolism, thought transference, are things to be handled occasionally; they are arguments which tend to perpetuate evil and death in the name of good.

“Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me.) to do thy will, O God.”

The oriental logic, magic, religion, and Brahm are but the perpetuation in changed forms of Jehovah, and necromancy, as described in the Old Testament. Every sentence of occultism impressed on thought as either true, or useful, is so much additional error for mortals to finally grapple, and overcome, otherwise it will destroy the health and advancement of the individual. Knowledge obtained from the senses makes man believe that cause and effect exist in matter; the unchristianizes thought, for it deflects from God, Spirit. If this knowledge includes human ruling powers, — the mind of men, — it is indeed diabolism, even as our missionaries declare it. Occultism is one of the highest attenuations of matter, and this I name the flesh, or evil, and homeopathists agree that the most attenuated potions of matter are the most potent.

The Hindoo prophet, or Yohis, will tell you that matter is illusion, and then interpret his philosophy, and religion, through matter, alias illusion. Looking at this thing our Master asked, “Do men gather grapes of thorns?” Can men make illusion profitable, or demonstrate Truth by error? The Hindoo prophet avers that brain matter is the channel for intelligence, therefore matter must maintain the intercommunion between his deity and of the Hindoo adept. His hypotheses demand that we look inwardly for all enlightment. But Christian Science demands, as did St. Paul’s Christianity, that we look outwardly for divine power and away from human consciousness. St. Paul argues against introspection whereby to work out the salvation of men, and says to be absent from the body and to be present with God.

The Hebrew lawgiver illustrated with good intent, and effect, the possibility and efficacy of controlling human belief through divine power. He uncovers its abuses by demonstrating the uses of truth which, from the beginning, error has sought, and is still seeking to simulate and mock.

The hypnotic illusion enters not at all into divine metaphysics. Moses’ serpent became a staff, something to rest upon, even the basis of a divine edict. His demonstration over the walking stick went to prove the nothingness of matter, in contradistinction to the material means and hypotheses of occultism, looking through a crystal, and dieting for power to play on the imagination. His second demonstration showed the effect of Truth on the senses, by which he healed leprosy. It all served to show the nothingness of matter, and emphasize the primitive truth that all is Mind, there is no other substance, or intelligence. The truism predicated of understanding, Moses utilized and disassociated with mere magic. His were scientific experiments made not with a humanly liberated intellectual force wherewith to make wonders, but to illustrate the power of divine Mind, the real Principle of all “mind flow,” aerial navigation, and the fallacy of ancient and modern “sympathetic physics,” or suppositional mind in matter.

The Old Testament dispensation has passed, and this period is the new advent of the Gospel, Christ’s Healing, whose words and works shall not pass away. The shocking Jewish materialism held that blood is the life of man.

Over the past thirty years or so, a Christian Science language has evolved that is apparently used either to sound spiritually minded or to protect the speaker’s lack of spiritual understanding. Some examples of this are as follows. In response to someone who has uncovered or rebuked evil, the remark, God is Love, is used and seems to carry with it a slight hint of disapproval as it is not supposed to be loving to uncover evil and destroy it, — apparently it is better to pretend there is no such thing. God is Love, is a most marvelous declaration, but is sorely misused in the attempt to excuse sin, to avoid the responsibility of handling evil and in trying to appear spiritually minded. Another phrase is, There is no evil or error! In Truth, there is not, but the phrase is used to avoid having to uncover evil and thus destroy it. And here is another, That is just not true about you. This one can be translated, overlook the evil and turn your back upon it, — all is well. Each of the foregoing phrases is used incorrectly by Christian Scientists. The unspoken thought that lurks behind these trite remarks is, say what’s expected, say something that hopefully sounds scientific, don’t be too honest because if you are, you’ll be criticized, — and, keep quiet, and don’t question anything, or others will discover that you do not understand the deep truths of Christian Science. These statements are used primarily to protect a lack of spiritual growth. We hear quite often, Speak only to those you can trust. This is sad but seemingly necessary. From Christian Science teachers and practitioners we hear, Don’t quote me, but This really means, Be careful that what I say doesn’t get to Boston, and I am disciplined We hear the following from pupils and those interested in getting ahead in the Movement: Have class with a teacher who is well known and preferably in a position of importance in Boston. It is difficult to get anywhere in the Movement without this kind of help.

All of these statements are based in a lack of genuineness that desires to appear to be a good Christian Scientist in order to succeed within the Movement without spiritual growth. This Christian Science vernacular has been given birth because sin is being dealt with in human ways.

Our church seems to have a large percentage of its members with cards guaranteeing their membership in the flat earth society, — holding to a love of materialism and even trying to promote it through Christian Science. Many Christian Scientists equate this mental sluggishness with progressive thinking, they say God is Love, there is no evil, hence there is nothing wrong with me. This, Christian Scientists claim, is their divine right of stagnation and is most sad, as it has produced havoc and disorder in social, economic, and political concepts and systems. We hear it said, God is taking care of it, and this is said without any dedicated metaphysical work on the part of the Christian Scientist. Failure to handle the serpent of sin results in forms of oriental mysticism, — the basis of all mental systems that lack moral and spiritual foundations. A misinterpretation of Christian Science, and the unwillingness of Christian Scientists to demonstrate genuine Christian Science, has enabled these false systems to flourish throughout the world, while making strong inroads into the minds and hearts of Christian Scientists. Not willing to uncover sin, the Christian Scientist becomes disobedient and the demoralizing elements of humanism, — getting along with mortals, weakness, and vacillation, — take over, and influence world thought erroneously.

In Miscellaneous Writings page 107:25 we read:

The lack of seeing one’s deformed mentality, and of repentance therefor, deep, never to be repented of, is retarding, and in certain morbid instances stopping, the growth of Christian Scientists. Without a knowledge of his sins, and repentance so severe that it destroys them, no person is or can be a Christian Scientist.

If the individual spiritual growth of Christian Scientists is stopped, is it any wonder that the Movement is not growing? Using Mrs. Eddy’s statement quoted above as a basis for counting the number of Christian Scientists, we have very few genuine Christian Scientists indeed.

What would foreign governments have done to the free exercise of Christian Science in their lands? We can be assured that it was difficult enough for Christian Scientists in foreign lands without adding fuel to that fire. But why would Mrs. Eddy want only Americans to serve on the Board? The European, Oriental, and all other concepts of law and government are entirely different from American law and government. American law and government are based upon local self-government, a system uniquely American. The relation of The Mother Church to its branches is most similar to that of the American system of government. The government of the Manual, and that of our nation, are based upon similar principles of self-government. How could a Board member from a totalitarian or monarchial system, a society built around a class system, or national government based upon centralized church systems, form a just estimate of the Manual and not feel compelled to change it? The answer is he or she could not. He who knows nothing of the American system of government neither knows nor understands the unique form of government outlined in the Manual of The Mother Church.

A pamphlet written in 1905 by Mr. Carol Norton, “The Christian Science Movement,” published by the Christian Science Publishing Society, details this parallel structure of the Manual with our system of political government. It states, “The relation of the branch churches to The Mother Church closely resembles that of the states of the American Union to the general government. A remarkable system of church polity has thus been instituted by Mrs. Eddy on the basis of self-government in Christian Science.” Are you still absolutely sure that Mrs. Eddy would have wanted that By-Law in the Manual changed?

Those who were raised with Episcopal, Roman Catholic, or centralized ecclesiastical beliefs, or those who come from monarchial, oriental or dictatorial governments, can in no way interpret the Manual from the view of local self-government, it is completely foreign to them.

How is this argument — God doesn’t know our Leader — stated in the movement? We are mortal; God doesn’t know us. I’m insignificant. What can one person do? The leaders in Boston are taking care of it. I don’t need to demonstrate. Accepting all of this error, produces a resignation to evil on the part of those who refuse to see the truth. It brings a sense of futility to those who do see through it, but will not handle it. It brings a struggle for healings and results in a rejection of absolute standards, such as the Manual. Many Christian Scientists then fail to resist pornography, violent and sexual TV content, and salacious literature. Thus, they become satisfied with incorrect metaphysics, akin to oriental mysticism, crime is not held in check, and they return to medicine and drugs. The absolutists openly claim that those who recognize Mrs. Eddy’s place in Bible prophecy reek with mysticism and vow to stamp out these misinformed Christian Scientists, keep them out of teaching, lecturing, board positions, and Sunday School teaching, and from having any position of importance in the Christian Science church.

What are the results of this error in the world? Those CSB’s who teach that God did not create the second degree, that it is not God-bestowed, reject the human and divine coincidence. They teach a total separation from God with no uplifting humanity. This teaching of humanism based in mortal mind effort, produces loneliness, doubt and fear, and leads to disease and suicide. Humanism is a rejection of the entire second degree that is based in the moral. “The teachers of Christian Science need to watch incessantly the trend of their own thoughts; watch that these be not secretly robbed, and themselves misguided, and so made to misteach others.” (Mis. p.114:7-10) Hinduism and oriental mysticism teach that the world is unreal and that we are nothing. Christian Science does not teach that. These foreign teachings, believed, produce extreme selfishness, — a lack of caring and consideration for others — and they are running our church from the highest to the lowest levels of responsibility.

The claim of absolutism is atheism and counterfeits the absolute Truth. It claims that we are all the same, no one is better than you or I, and that we are all separate from God.

Socialism is a rejection of individual excellence. It pulls everything down and reduces it to the lowest common denominator. When Christian Scientists accept the lie that Mrs. Eddy is no better than you or I, they are reinforcing all the claims of socialism in the world today. Many Christian Scientists have a false concept of heaven that includes an oriental Nirvana for which we need not work in order to achieve. They feel that “Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven” can be accomplished by finding the best practitioner possible — cradle to grave mental care without individual effort.

Saying that God does not choose us and does not know us is oriental mysticism; it is not Christian Science. It is an argument of malicious animal magnetism that says, because we are mortal and because Mrs. Eddy was mortal, God did not know her nor choose her for her special work. That argument is not true. In the time of Abraham and Lot, God knew there were no righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah. In Elijah’s day He knew there were 7,000 who had not bowed to Baal. Were the 7,000 not known through the second degree? The Bible is very clear on this point and, if we do not accept that God knew the time and knew who was righteous, then we reject the Bible and it appears that Christian Science is not in accord with the Bible — and it is.

When we read Genesis II as allegory and legend, but not as a fairy tale or fantasy, we gain the truths it imparts and understand Mrs. Eddy’s marvelous lessons concerning it, and this can be said of all Bible history. To understand the story of Adam and Eve, we must not be confused by the errors of oriental mysticism.

The error of oriental mysticism, ‘speak, hear and see no evil, for this is all a dream,’ is not Christian Science. We should not say the Bible is just history, therefore it is not necessary that we understand it. Would this not produce an entire group of people who do not see the importance of understanding the history of the Christian Science Movement or the importance of their Bibles? When Mrs. Eddy was asked to recommend a practitioner, she told the inquirer to find a practitioner who knew the history of Christian Science. “The history of our country, like all history, illustrates the might of Mind, and shows human power to be proportionate to its embodiment of right thinking.” (S&H p. 225:14-16)

The false argument of oriental mysticism that says we must impersonalize all good without seeing individual spiritual creation is the same as saying we must expunge human history. We should not expunge our individual history any more than we expunge human history. It is all to be revised in order to further glorify God. Science and Health says it in a similar way, “If mortals are not progressive, past failures will be repeated until all wrong work is effaced or rectified.” (S&H p.240:19-21) Good must be individualized.

Our identity is not lost after we leave this experience

All that has been said so far in this article concerning man continues and does not stop after this human experience. If, as some contend, God does not know the mortal Jesus or Mrs. Eddy, or us, then this experience would be totally forgotten once we pass on. Some say that we do forget all we have done here and everyone we know. Apparently, the teaching is as follows: mortality is a dream, therefore everything to do with this dream is unreal and the individuals in it have no past, present, or future. This is oriental mysticism. The thought that we are nothing must be handled. This lie has arisen to supposedly prove there is no Leader in heaven, therefore, we have no Leader. We do not forget all we have done here, nor do we forget every one we knew. Doesn’t our Leader tell us that we each have a place in time and eternity? (Ret. p.70:18)

If we do not remember individuals after passing on, then all our deeds are forgotten, and there can be no reward for good deeds and no punishment for bad deeds. How can this be, when we read in Matthew that those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake are rewarded in heaven? (Matt. 5:11,12) And what of those who must be punished for evil? According to oriental mysticism, there would be no punishment. But Mrs. Eddy speaks about “the prison and the scaffold” disciplining mankind. (S&H p.202:10) If we do not remember our former lives after passing on, the scaffold could not be a discipline for felons. Mrs. Eddy says, “As death findeth mortal man, so shall he be after death, until probation and growth shall effect the needed change.”(S&H p.291:23-25) “When the hearts of Christian Scientists are woven together as are their names in the web of history, earth will float majestically heaven’s heraldry, and echo the song of angels: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’” (Mis. p.145:26) Mrs. Eddy very clearly says our names are not forgotten — either for good or for evil, for supporting her or for rejecting her.

Our Leader says, “The divine Mind maintains all identities, from a blade of grass to a star, as distinct and eternal.” (S&H p.70:12-13) How could Jesus’ or our identity ever be lost? And if our identities are never lost, how could it ever be said we would forget those we know while on earth?

Did the illusion of death, which we know to be nothing, remove Mrs. Eddy from her position of leadership? We cannot demonstrate Christian Science if we think it did, nor can the Movement succeed. Let us stop the claims of oriental mysticism that falsely state because there is no sin we can sin with impunity, that because God knows no mortal, He knows no Leader named Mrs. Eddy, that we need not uncover evil because this experience is nothing and we are nothing. We must not let malicious animal magnetism speak in this manner.

Entertaining the thought that God knows no sin and therefore believing I can do whatever I want, is a psychological narcotic and is not Christian Science. Christian Scientists who say, Well, as a mortal I am nothing, therefore I can live it up, are under the influence of oriental mysticism. They are attempting to use their misunderstanding of Christian Science to silence their conscience. It does not work and the results are catastrophic.

From Mary Baker Eddy’s Six Days of Revelation, the green book, page 200

Twenty years ago, when I /irst brought this subject to the consideration of the race, to be a Christian Science Mind-healer was no bid for respectability, popularity, wealth. It was a sharp appeal to conscience, spiritual growth, moral courage. The question then was, “Can you drink the cup?” On this basis there was no danger of injuring oneself or one’s neighbor. The pioneer work has been done faithfully. Now comes the inquiry, Shall this work be overthrown by charlatans of the baser sort? Naught but the unselfish purpose, the higher understanding of God and the love of man, are incentives to real Mind-healing. Once in this direction, and persecution, hardship, sacrifice, only “lead into green pastures, and beside the still waters.”

Of Esoteric Buddhism, its oriental necromancy, philosophy, or religion, I am happily ignorant, Such human philosophy may charm, allure, but it obscures the spiritual sense of Divine Science.

I recommend that you quit other reading and confine yourself for the present to the perusal of the Scriptures, and my work, Science and Health. This book has a Key to the Scriptures that never picks the lock, but opens the Word only as it turns in the grooves of God. This course pursued, and you will gain consolation and light. Theosophy is not allied to Christian Science: it misleads the understanding, whereas Christian Science enlightens it.

From Association Addresses by Bicknell Young, page 1 of the 1936 Association Address

To be alert is to be alive. This alertness is not less Christian because of being scientific. It must be both because of divine Principle and divine law. Divine Principle is Love, and its law is perfection, the only law. This law demonstrated by a human being in behalf of himself and others operates with the incisiveness and accuracy of Truth, which, like charity, blesses giver and receiver equally.

Thus equipped, and maintaining this equipment of divine power and law, occult suggestions find no response and fall and perish because of their own nothingness.

The oriental esoteric beliefs going under the name of astrology, numerology, and various other pseudonyms, cannot be dangerous or misleading to that alertness which rejects and extinguishes every suggestion of any power or influence other than the Mind that is good, God. Nothing is to be gained by tampering with evil in any form. In fact, the very suggestion of yielding to such an enticement is the open door to disaster.

Any temptation to believe in or fear such theories or systems should be met with that sudden and unequivocal dismissal which our textbook teaches, and which Jesus is said to have expressed in the words “.., Get thee behind me, Satan:..” (Luke 4:8). Seeing that Good, Principle, Love, is the only power, it is impossible to ascribe power to anything else or to belief that there is anything else.

From the 1960 Association Address by Mildred LeBlond

From the things I have investigated concerning this oriental philosophy I seeit is an attempt of mortal mind to arrive at a sense of peace and harmony, by beingconscious of nothing, either good or bad, Godly or ungodly. Roughly, it is the effortto balance all elements incorrectly, by having no lines of demarcation that wouldindicate right or wrong. To the Christian Scientist, this is an impossible theory andcould only appeal to mental laziness.

Because this error seems to have appeared in the ranks of ChristianScientists, I have brought it to your attention and show once again that our BelovedLeader was aware of all of the basic forms of erroneous religious and philosophicalreasonings. Hear what she says about Buddhism, of which Zen is but a derivative.

The doctrine of Buddha, which rests on a heathen basis for its Nirvana, represents not the divinity of Christian Science, in which Truth, or Christ, finds its paradise in Spirit, in the consciousness of heaven within us – health, harmony, holiness, entirely apart from limitations, which woulddwarf individuality in personality and couple evil with good … Think notthat Christian Science tends towards Buddhism or any other ism. Percontra, Christian Science destroys such tendency. (My 118:25)

Truth is actual, real and infinite, and because of this, it grinds to powder allthat is unlike itself. As Christian Scientists in our advancing steps of freedom, letus be wise and careful to save ourselves many unhappy moments along our journey, when we find the avenue we have taken is the wrong one. When reading otherbooks or the writings of thinkers throughout the ages, let our attitude be as wasMrs. Eddy’s toward them. She speaks of Socrates, Plato, Kant, Locke, Berkeley,Tyndall, Darwin and Spencer as sitting at the feet of Jesus. In this way wedemonstrate the allness and wholeness of Truth, one garment without seams, oneinfinite Being throughout all ages. This is the chain of reality appearing in all ages, which only Science and Health has recorded and explained.

From the 1918 Annual Meeting of the Mother Church, in the June 15th, 1918 Christian Science Sentinel

The retiring President, Mr. McCrackan, then delivered the following address:— …

Let this year, 1918, be the beginning of a new world, of an everlasting peace of Principle in which men and women become like little children, having the purity of the mind of the Christ. Obedience to spiritual thinking rends the veil of materialism for the world. Let the sick, the sinning, the bereaved, the hungry and thirsty be able to say of each one of us, as we read in the Song of Solomon, “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” I, myself, came to the spiritual feast of Christian Science because I was unhappy. Everything else had failed me. I also saw in Christian Science the solution of world problems. During the past year my life was saved, and I desire to give this grateful acknowledgment of Christian Science healing. I know this very kind of healing is what has made it possible for so many of you to be here to-day.

Let us extend our healing works to the whole world. We must awake to the mental manipulations of oriental magic and scholastic priestcraft. Ruthless militancy and medical domination are their outcome. Are we aware that the necromancers of to-day pretend to sit in the high seats of authority and to mesmerize the world with their mental suggestions and hypnotic tricks? The world war is the explosion of the highest form of evil destroying itself. As this darkness is wiped out with spiritual understanding victory will follow, and the dove of eternal peace will descend with the light of heaven upon a waiting world. There should be no defensive waiting for the enemy, but a forward march to victory, making the offensive the uncovering of all error. Error is an offense, so it can be attacked and destroyed. There can be no discussion of nor concession to a false peace. God’s joyous victory only can establish real peace.

Mrs. Eddy opened the way for this, and our gratitude should increase continually. If we as Christian Scientists do not fully appreciate the most wonderful woman of all ages, how can the world appreciate her and be expected to be healed through her teachings? Yes, the world claims we worship Mrs. Eddy. Why this? Because the enemy does not want woman to lighten the world nor to fill a place of power. The enemy wants to keep the world in darkness. But let us be awake, that mental manipulation cannot instill fear into our thoughts, nor suppress our ardor, nor make us withhold our gratitude. We know that her ever present love has never left us.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

‘The current push in Boston to mix, highlight, and emphasize all of the supposed similarities of Christian Science with non-Christian religions, philosophies, and health care systems brings to mind the lines from the Book of Revelation: “And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the Hood.” (Rev. 12: 15) One would hardly have expected that officialdom in Boston would be helping to open the floodgates of orientalism, Theosophy, and the New Age through Mrs. Eddy’s own periodicals and church. The only possible result would be to dilute, — if it were possible, — the revelation of Christian Science as taught by Mrs. Eddy and to confuse the sincere seeker. Mrs. Eddy writes: ‘The doom of the Babylonish woman, referred to in Revelation, is being fulfilled. This woman, ‘drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus,’ ‘drunk with the wine of her fornication,’ would enter even the church, — the body of Christ, Truth; and, retaining the heart of the harlot and the purpose of the destroying angel, would pour wormwood into the waters — the disturbed human mind – – to drown the strong swimmer struggling for the shore, — aiming for truth, — and if possible to poison such as drink of the living water.” (My. 126:29-7)

From Belief: Reversal, Relapse, Rebound by Bicknell Young

The unfolding idea uncovers the belief, and uncovers it as nothing. Belief claims to uncover belief, but it uncovers it as something. True chemicalization is a divine operation; it is the divine idea doing away with the belief, and revealing its nothingness. Painful chemicalization is resistance on the part of the belief to the divine idea. But it is the unfoldment doing it all, and not some awful thing happening. You should recognize it as idea, operating as law to the belief to dispel it. It is going on in the individual consciousness. The whole world is in a state of chemicalization, and some of it is painful; but it is the Truth doing it all; it isn’t the belief doing anything.

You should declare that belief is calling itself an evil mind, a liberated belief claiming to be Mind. It cannot operate even in belief, or at all through any kind of belief — a belief of Judaism, Japanese occultism, oriental priestcraft, Roman Catholic priestcraft, or materia medica. You should declare that belief, claiming to be Mind, cannot operate in belief at all, to produce phenomena, because belief has no origin, no basic principle. It cannot operate as law or cause; it has no substance, body, influence, function, control, or so-called will-power. It has no subject or object, no subject on which to act, and no object on which to act; no medium or channel, no impress or impact. It cannot operate in belief, or at all, to obstruct or delay the unfolding idea. It cannot operate as hatred of divine metaphysics, of Christian Science.

It cannot operate as envy of the unfolding idea, or jealousy, greed, slander, misrepresentation; it cannot discountenance the unfolding idea; it cannot operate through a belief of perversion; it cannot operate as penalty or curse; it cannot operate as poison, evil prediction, destructive electrical vibration or force. It cannot operate as pest or to produce phenomena of pest, plague, drought, failure, or lack of success. The denial of error nullifies the error, and the declaration of the fact demonstrates the fact. “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin an blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.” Jesus warned.

The Secret Hypnotism of the Jesuits From “The American Standard Magazaine” of November 1, 1924

An exposure of the sinister mental methods, used by Papal Adepts, to influence the thoughts and acts of politicians and other persons.

The advent of radio broadcasting has led many people to give study to certain mental phenomena which they had never before considered. You who read these lines are aware of the striking fact that there is now passing through this room where you are sitting a continuous current of thought expressed in words, tones, or notes of instruments. If you have a radio receiver set, you can adjust it so it will make these sounds audible; it will reproduce the lecture, the song, recital or musical instrument as if the performer were in your room, instead of many miles away.

From the lesson of radio communication, two facts are being impressed upon the public mind – first, that the world we live in, and the things in it, are mental in nature and origin; and second, that thought can be and is projected through space, to reach a distant object, wholly by mental means, without mechanical equipment. It is obvious that all communication is from one mind to another; the flesh does not transmit intelligence nor does inanimate matter have in it any conscious life; for when the mind is withdrawn from the fleshly body, the lifeless clay is all that remains. But the fact that one mind can transmit thought to another mind at a distance is a new discovery to the general public, though long well known to the initiate.

We hear much today of mental phenomena, mental influence, and drugless methods of healing diseases. All these things are evidence that thought is a force for good and evil, according to the nature of the thinker, and that thoughts projected into consciousness can reach other minds at a distance, just as radio broadcasting can reach receivers far removed from the central station, provided the receivers are attuned to a sympathetic pitch.

This phenomena of thought transference, when used by an individual Christly character, and with the knowledge and consent of the person who is receiving the mental influence, can be employed for beneficial ends, in correcting discordant mental conditions, conquering fear and limitations, and healing diseases, which are always mental in origin. But when used by unscrupulous adepts for evil purposes, this sort of mental telepathy becomes a terrible menace – a secret and powerful weapon of destruction, by which the minds of persons can be manipulated without their knowledge, to their grave injury and damage.

Mental telepathy of this latter sort is the basis of Jesuitism. The efficacy of thought transference through concentration of the mind and exertion of the human will (which is always illegitimate) has long been a familiar secret within the Jesuit Order, and has been practiced by the Jesuit adepts for centuries. The secret of the Jesuits has been guarded and protected with the utmost efficiency, during all the years of the Order’s history; but no secrets are hidden from the mind illumined with the light of Christ to whom “There is nothing covered that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.” (Matt. 10:26)

No country which harbors Jesuits is safe; for the advanced members of this Papal Order are trained adepts in mental manipulation, and are schooled in a brand of ethics which is the most immoral and corrupt ever conceived by the carnal mind of fallen humanity. Lying deception, trickery, sophistry, and chicanery are raised to a status of fine arts by Jesuit Theologians on the general maxim that everything is legitimate provided it advances the cause of the Pope. Jesuit Theologians, such as Suarez and Bussambaum, have not hesitated to advocate assassination as a legitimate practice of Jesuitism; it is the opposite of Christianity, and the most deadly fruit of the forbidden “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil,” the highest attenuation of wickedness of which the human mind is capable.

At various times in history the Jesuits have been driven out of nearly every country in Europe, at the point of the sword. In America “They have never yet been molested, for we are still young in the understanding of evil,” and only a few are awake. Still, one watchman upon the walls is enough to save the city.

To a Roman Catholic, a Protestant is not considered as worthy of any consideration. He is a heretic, lost to salvation, because he does not recognize the Pope as God upon the earth and Vicar to Christ. To kill a heretic is not a sin from the Papal point of view, therefore, no compunction whatever is felt at manipulating the mind of a person who is outside of the Roman Catholic System.

When a man in America becomes a prominent factor in national affairs, such as President, Cabinet Member, Judge of an important court, or Governor of a State, the Jesuits single him out for their sinister attentions. Year in and year out there is not one hour in the twenty-four that the man holding the office of President of the United States is free from the occult efforts of Jesuits and other Papists, who are adept in mental practice, to control and manipulate his thought. Relays of trained workers, operating upon pre-arranged schedule, send forth their aggressive mental suggestions, not as a rule broadcast, like a radio, to all quarters, but specifically aimed at the person whom the Jesuits desire to manipulate and whose name is held by them in mind for this purpose. Just as you may call a person on the telephone, to whom you desire to speak, so the Jesuit adepts speak mentally to the specific person whom they wish to reach. They hold his name in mind, concentrate their mental forces upon him, striving to control him, exactly as the hypnotist mentally controls his subject and makes him do whatever the hypnotist wills.

In electrical magnetism, if two bodies are magnetized in a certain manner they are strongly attracted; but if the opposite electrical condition prevails the two poles will forcibly repel each other. Likewise, in the mental realm there must be some degree of affinity between the projector of the thought and the receiver, just as the radio receiving set must be attuned to the proper wave length in order to produce the words and sounds sent in the air.

An individual who has an understanding of mental practice, and who has a Christian character, has the power to repel Jesuit manipulations and he remains unaffected – but at this hour such persons are few. Any human weakness affords an opening for Jesuitism, such as ambition, pride, sensuality, or lust for place or power. By mentally addressing their arguments to such avenues of approach, Jesuit adepts are able to gain an entrance into the consciousness of the person whose mind they desire to manipulate.

Through mental means it is possible to suggest fear, doubt, fretful irritability and antipathy towards another person, diseases of various kinds, poisons, discouragement, even a desire to destroy one’s self. Opinions upon such matters of importance can be suggested mentally to a person who is being manipulated by Jesuits, in such a manner (secret) that he thinks he is forming an independent judgment from his own thought; and in this way, through skillful and gradual manipulations, step by step, he can be led to take action or form opinions that he would never sponsor if left to his own proclivities.

Obviously the efficiency of Jesuitism is immensely increased if a mind strongly sympathetic to it can be strategically placed close to the desired spot. If a public man has a private secretary or other assistants who are Roman Catholics, that mind, attuned to Jesuitism by natural inclination and training, acts as a receiver to amplify the mental suggestions, and reinforce their potency, so that the individual Roman Catholic’s mind acts as a magnetic receiver and a transmitter of Jesuitism. An individual highly sensitized to mental phenomena and spiritually alert, can “feel the thought” of the Roman Catholic as soon as he comes in contact with it. Beside their mental attacks upon specific persons, Jesuits broadcast waves of suggestions addressed impartially to all non-Romanists intending to accomplish certain objects desired by popery. At present the concentrated forces of Jesuitism are active in striving to propagate two suggestions – “Tolerance” and “Religious Immunity.” Every effort is being made to convince the public that there is a virtue in non-resistance to evil, that we must be broadminded, must “live and let live,” and not interfere with or oppose the evil doer, because “it is none of our business.” This attitude of non-resistance to evil, indifference and apathy, is in itself an evil of a serious sort. We have the example of Christ Jesus, who said, “I come not to send peace but a sword,” (Matt. 10:34); who said of the pagan temple, “There shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down”; “Generation of vipers”; “Liar and the Father of it”; “Murderer from the beginning”; “How can you escape the damnation of hell?”, etc.

The Jesuit curses and anathemas that have been discovered and published at various times, addressed to opponents of Popery, contain specific mental arguments intended to suggest disease to various parts of the body, such as eyes, teeth, stomach, liver, heart, lungs, every member of the physical structure. Such attacks of mental assassins have been responsible for the destruction of many persons in the past, who have stood in the way of Jesuit designs.

Jesuits are especially adept in creating schemes, misunderstandings, antagonisms and factions. One of their favorite maxims is “Divide and conquer.” To accomplish anything in the world, a certain amount of organization is required – and there is usually more or less friction between component parts, which has to be overcome. Jesuits are skillful in magnifying this friction, in creating unreasonable antipathies between one person and another, and in stimulating the material ambitions of rival leaders, thus splitting their opponents into factions, and papalizing usefulness of a movement. “Boring from within” is a potent Jesuit practice. For the advancement of the purposes of the Jesuit order and the Roman Catholic system of which it is part, a Jesuit is encouraged to pretend to adopt whatever creed he desires, to take oaths of fealty to any organization, fraternity, government, or institution which the Jesuits desire to manipulate. Jesuit devotees who have concentrated their lives to the purpose of popery, may prepare themselves over many years to accomplish certain ends.

Few, if any, of the Protestant Fraternities are free of Jesuit spies, in the guise of loyal members, even leaders. Protestant sects undoubtedly have within their ministry concealed Jesuits, at work to destroy from within; and in addition to the Jesuits themselves, it must be remembered that there are types of minds peculiarly amenable to Jesuit control suggestion, just as certain persons are specially adapted to serve as subjects for hypnotists, who can make them do whatever they wish.

In addition to the intentional manipulators, such as Jesuits and protocol Jews, skilled in oriental occultism, it should be remembered that the entire world of consciousness in which we dwell is mental, and that two mental forces seem to be constantly operating, namely good and evil, truth and error, the Christ-mind and the carnal mind of the flesh. In reality God or good is ALL and the carnal evil mind has no existence; but it has a counterfeit existence – as a fraudulent claim of Biblical allegory, only so far as we listen to it and admit its illegitimate argument.

An endless stream of thought is constantly floating past us in the mental realm, just as the vibrations of radio communications. We receive and respond to as much good or evil as our natures may be attuned to.

“The mind is the measure of man.” Thoughts are things and things are thoughts expressed. Each person takes from the mental realm that which he is in tune with. The intelligent spiritual thinker can deliberately exclude what is evil and dwell upon that which is good. St. Paul advised, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phil 4:8)

The individual of Christly character, imbued with the spirit that is exhaled from the pages of the New Testament, and who strives constantly to partake of the nature of his Exemplar, Christ, is immune to the manipulations of the carnal mind or Jesuitism. He is not attuned to that wave length. Moreover, since Jesuitical mental telepathy is an argument spoken to the consciousness by Jesuit adepts, and directed by his concentrated will towards the object of his attention, it can be nullified by a counter effort. Protection is afforded by developing and exerting one’s own spiritual mental powers, and projecting thought with emphasis and conviction an opposing argument in some such fashion as the following:

“God is all, the only Cause and Creator, and I am God’s child, and therefore subject only to the spiritual influence of God and His Christ. Since God is all, there can be no carnal mind or evil mind to influence my acts or thoughts. There is nothing in my thought to respond to evil, or afford an opening through which to enter my consciousness; for I banish all claims of hatred, malice, revenge, greed, sensuality. I am obedient to the will of God and I am governed by the spiritual law of His Christ.

“No aggressive suggestions from Jesuit manipulations can touch my consciousness or enter my thought, for it is already filled with Truth and Love. My health and my strength are from the Christ-Mind, therefore no mental arrow can reach me in any part or organ of my body, which is not flesh, but is the immortal from “The American Standard Magazine” image of God and my Creator. I bid every claim of evil: ‘Return and take effect in your sender.’

“Divine Love covers and protects me with impenetrable armor; for ‘He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall cover me with His feathers and under His wings shall I trust. His truth shall be my shield and buckler. Because I have made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most high, my habitation, there shall no evil befall me, neither shall any plague come nigh my dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways.” (Ps. 91)

The spiritually minded return good for evil, love for hate, and thus defend themselves from mental assassins, through the spiritual mental armor with which Christ renders his followers invulnerable to the hypnotic suggestions of the enemy of God and His Son, Christ.

Not too long after this article appeared the magazine was put out of business.”

From The Dixon Letter

Hypocrisy, hypnotism and self-will in the name of Christian Science, and lust and greed for place and power in the ranks of Christian Scientists, is the “spiritual wickedness in high places” in this age. The qualities of mortal thought are brought into action and used by hidden mental powers working through Roman Catholicism, occultism, theosophy, Orientalism or animal magnetism, and handling those who have come selfishly in the name of Christian Science. Only the pure in heart and purpose, and the honest, can really withstand the swollen dragon of these days. With self-will, greed, and hypocrisy in one’s heart, one cannot be free from those mental qualities from without. Such as these are easy tools for the devil. It is the “Lamb” that slays the “wolf.” It is the innocence and honesty and good-will toward men that detect, check and destroy the hypocrisy and lust that would swallow up the Christ in this age. However, the “Lamb” can never be slain, for it is spiritual and real. Animal magnetism will finally disappear from the face of the earth, for it is not real and it has no true power. Because the Christ was never crucified, Christian Science can never be destroyed. It is destined to rule the world. Animal magnetism may delay the inevitable effect of the second coming of the Christ, but it can never prevent it from fulfilling finally the destiny of destroying animal magnetism. The time of this fulfilling depends upon Christian Scientists.

Evil calling itself something good, in the guise of intellectuality, or natural laws such as heredity, astrology, palmistry, horoscope, mental science, false metaphysics, etc., is seeking to do the work of Christian Science and is luring many students away from pure and honest channels of truth into these by-paths which can only lead into confusion and disaster. This is more or less the effect of mental work of theosophists, Roman Catholics, Oriental mental workers, and false Christian Scientists. The honest workers in Christian Science must see to it that their work is not lured away from them in this way.

There is one true law of attraction, adjustment and classification. This is the divine Mind, and this law must rule the lesser or man consciousness. Occultism, esoteric magic, hypnotism and mesmerism only lead to sin, disease, lack and death, and the weary seekers after rest, healing and real accomplishment, can find no lasting consolation from these false methods. Many Christian Scientists have gone after these false gods, believing that they are in advance of Christian Science, as that is their claim. We are warned in the Bible that evil will fool even the elect, and many of the elect are right now deceived and drawn away from the right path. Thus, honest Christian Science workers and practitioners are either finding themselves without work, or busy with those who are not willing or ready for the real truth.

The fields are white with real harvest of healing, and these false systems must not reap the harvest to the loss and dismay of the true seekers after Christian Science healing and enlightenment.

Animal magnetism is clouding the human consciousness with these lies, claiming that help really comes from these false systems. It is the essence of evil trying to destroy the light of Christian Science, or the Christ, Truth. It is Orientalism trying to swallow up Christianity. Christian Scientists must watch and pray that this ancient and very alert original sin takes nothing away from them. The Christian Scientist’s own progress depends upon the work he does for others as well as for himself, and therefore, he must see to it that his work cannot be allured from him by this evil.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” He also said, “And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers.” In this same chapter (tenth) of John, Jesus said, “There shall be one fold and one shepherd.” Christian Scientists know that there is one Christ and the truth belongs only to the Christ. Nothing else can accomplish the salvation of humanity, and those who are lured away after these worst of all false systems, will only have to re-trace their footsteps with trouble and sorrow.

Christian Scientists who are honest and clear cannot be made to believe, through aggressive mental suggestion, that there is a power of attraction in animal magnetism or original evil to take their work or their reward away from them. It is not power, but the entire absence of power and intelligence. It is wholly negative, and must be rendered so by the one divine Mind as revealed in Christian Science.

It doesn’t make any difference how much theosophy, Roman Catholicism, Orientalism, materia medica, astrology, intellectuality, spiritualism, occultism, old theology, or any false mental science may claim to be and know something; it is all nothing trying to be and do something. The Christian Scientists will cling to Christian Science as the only healer, the only teacher, and the only help that can be or do anything real. It is the only help that humanity has, and the more we are called narrow-minded for knowing this fact, the more earnestly we must believe it. All of these systems are part and parcel of the carnal mind, and the carnal mind is enmity against God, or the one true Mind. Therefore, these systems are enmity against Christian Science and the true Christian Scientist. They must be vigorously resisted, reversed and destroyed, or the light of Christian Science will be darkened and the individual Christian Scientist will be forced to struggle against this dragon in the dark and very much alone.

A Christian Scientist must be a law unto himself, that this mental malpractice cannot make any conditions for him in any way. It cannot darken his awakening spiritual consciousness, neither can it reverse his work, growth or demonstration. It cannot embrace him in its false thinking, and make him believe any of its suggestions of lack, failure, discouragement or isolation. God has sanctioned Christian Science. He has predestined it to its work of salvation; therefore, it must accomplish its purpose. The honest Christian Scientist comes under this law also, and is protected from the dragon that would swallow up God’s anointed.

From Electricity by Bicknell Young

The Oriental concept of God would separate the world from Christ – the spiritual idea, or idea of Spirit. It claims that what is called matter is spiritual substance, and that the so-called mortal mind is the divine Mind or Spirit – not knowing the difference. It is the claim of spiritualizing matter, calling material sense spiritual, a claim of an Oriental taint that has appeared in all religious teaching and in all human thought – a claim of an inherited taint. And does it not claim to be objectified as so-called material or inherited taints? I was told that Mrs. Eddy once said that the claim of “catarrh” should be handled as false theology. All scholastic theology is a claim of man’s separation from God. But there is no taint of Orientalism in our discernment of our oneness with God. There is no taint in God’s selfhood, therefore none in ours, because there is only one selfhood. It is as Mrs. Eddy said (Un. 35:23-9) only “an outlined falsity of consciousness,” an outlined belief that man is something separate from God. Isn’t that the taint of belief that Jesus and the early Christians had to dispel in their time? Isn’t that the taint that Christian Scientists have to dispel – that false concept that man is separate from God – from Spirit – spiritual discernment? Would the spiritual discernment of God as man’s identity, as both noumenon and phenomenon, the infinite One, the one God, the one Being, the perfect and only I AM, dispel all suggestions of taint? There is no taint.
