The Power of Right Thinking

by

There are right ways of thinking and acting, in contrast to wrong ways of thought and action. We need to choose and hold to right thinking, and discard the wrong, if we want good results. We don’t ever need to have fear or superstition about our own or anyone else’s wrong thinking, because Christian Science shows us that all power belongs to God, to good alone, and that evil is not power. Christian Science teaches us the power of scientific right thinking, and the instability and powerlessness of material thinking. Jesus healed, by spiritual means, things that were considered incurable, and proved that any form of limitation is unreal, in spite of general belief to the contrary. Spiritual thinking, or right knowing, which understands that God is the only Mind, and that His creation is the reflection of this Mind, brings us good beyond measure.

It brings great peace and harmony as we accept and use it, wherever we may find ourselves. The opposite of spiritually right thinking is the indulgence of wrong thinking, and results in confusion for the person who indulges it, and those who may be influenced by it, unless it is nullified by the realization of the omnipresence and all-power of the one changeless Mind, God, and of the perfection of His eternal spiritual ideas. Right scientific practice rests upon letting that Mind be in us “which was also in Christ Jesus.” It consists of realizing the perfection and eternality of God, good, and the nothingness or nonexistence of evil, “which deceiveth the whole world.” Mrs. Eddy writes, “Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God’s own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick.” (S&H) Spiritually scientific practice also means denying the fears and misapprehensions of mortal mind, through knowing the facts about God and man. This corrects the errors which lead to confusion and suffering. Jesus wasn’t at all disturbed by the negative thought of the Jews concerning his sayings. He was so firmly entrenched in the knowledge of his spiritual oneness with God, that no adverse criticism could affect him. The solid conviction that there is but one Mind, and that Mind is altogether good, and that there is no other consciousness or power, establishes harmony and keeps us safe at all times. As we handle the lying pretensions of evil, we learn more of Truth, and grow through our experiences.

In an article entitled, “What Our Leader Says,” Mrs. Eddy writes: “Beloved Christian Scientists, keep your minds so filled with Truth and Love, that sin, disease, and death cannot enter them. It is plain that nothing can be added to the mind already full. There is no door through which evil can enter, and no space for evil to fill in a mind filled with goodness. Good thoughts are an impervious armor; clad therewith you are completely shielded from the attacks of error of every sort. And not only yourselves are safe, but all whom your thoughts rest upon are thereby benefited.” The necessity, therefore, is to concern ourselves, not with what others are thinking, but with filling our own consciousness, and keeping it filled, with the truth about God and man. This is our sure defense against evil. When this is done, and our innermost thoughts are stayed on God, our outward experience will be protected and enriched by the consciousness of good.
