The Great Heart Of Infinite Love

From the Christian Science Sentinel, April 3, 1948, by

In a poem entitled “Signs of the Heart,” Mary Baker Eddy writes in the second stanza (Poems, p. 24):

“O Love divine,
This heart of Thine
Is all I need to comfort mine.”

Today, as yesterday, this great heart of Love is expressed in the living, palpitating presence of the healing Christ, revealing the divine nature of God to men. It is restoring the sick, reforming the sinner, and raising the dead through the gentle ministry of Christian Science. As thought becomes spiritualized, this great heart will be understood to be inseparable from the life-giving, animating, creative Principle, God, giving individuality and being to man. Without the governing, controlling power of this great heart, man could not exist for a moment. Since man’s coexistence with God is eternal, nothing can sever this divine relationship. In reality, man cannot be dispirited, discouraged, or disheartened, for God has said (Ezek. 11:19), “I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you.”

Someone may say at this point, This is all very beautiful and inspiring, but just what does it mean to me in seeking healing for heart trouble? It means this: that you too can be permanently healed of your heart disease, just as a member of the writer’s family was, through the understanding and realization of your individual at-one-ment, as the child of God, with this great, life-giving heart of Love.

This woman had been suffering from a complication of diseases for over ten years, and her heart was badly affected. After exhausting every material means known to her doctors, she turned to Christian Science in desperation and was healed through reading “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mrs. Eddy. She often said that when she came to pages 112 to 116 of this textbook, she felt her healing taking place as she saw that Christian Science was demonstrated from the basis of one divine Principle. Her thought opened to the divine law of Love governing man. Her heart trouble fled as she pondered these words by Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 113): “The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love. Without this, the letter is but the dead body of Science, — pulseless, cold, inanimate.”

If this is true of Christian Science, the woman reasoned, it should be true of those who accept the teachings of Christian Science; and since I have accepted the revelation of Christian Science I begin to see the spiritual fact that what is really vital to me is Love. Through this unfoldment the healing Christ, the manifestation of the living, palpitating presence of Love, annulled the verdict of death, animated and invigorated her with a newness of life and a keen consciousness of God’s presence. With a new sense of heart derived from Spirit instead of matter, she proved these spiritual facts for herself, as well as others, in freedom and health for many years. Anyone seeking healing can feel this same vitalizing power permeating his being and restoring his health, for the Bible tells us that God is no respecter of persons. What He does for one, He is ready to do for all.

Thousands of people are being heartened, renewed, regenerated, revitalized, and established through the consciousness of the restoring presence of the Christ. Thus the divine nature of God is being manifested through understanding of the great heart of Love, giving to mankind true motives, right desires, pure affection, joy, happiness, prosperity, and success. By allaying men’s fears and destroying the false beliefs which make the body sick and the heart faint, the Christ dispels also the errors of selfishness, such as animosity, rivalry, deceit, dishonesty, jealousy, envy, revenge, and hate.

The heart of humanity is beginning to know its Redeemer through Christian Science. This Science exposes the false action of mortal mind, which governs every function and organ of the material body, and reveals the supremacy of immortal divine Mind as the only power governing God’s universe and man. It shows that through the realization of the all-controlling power of God mortal mind is subjugated and the body becomes harmonious. St. Paul clearly saw the truth that we live in and because of God when he said in that wonderful chapter in Acts (17:25, 28) that God “giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; … for in him we live, and move, and have our being.”

It must be spiritually perceived and accepted that there is but one God, one Mind, one Soul, governing man and the universe; then spiritual enlightenment reveals spontaneously that there is but one heart — the heart of Love — pulsating, impelling, stimulating, energizing, controlling, and animating man. Its action is perpetual, immutable, inexhaustible, because it is the vitality of Life and Love. All true action and volition proceeds from this divine source, and nothing can interrupt the ever continuous, constant, harmonious action of God, which is individualized in man. There is but one cause and effect, and this fact is the heart of Christianity, uniting in one body all men.

The loving Father is holding His universal family safe from harm in the great heart of infinite Love, ever strengthening and heartening all. The angels of His presence are constantly bringing comfort and assurance to humanity, so that all can unite in saying with Mrs. Eddy,

“O Love divine,
This heart of Thine
Is all I need to comfort mine.”
