Reliance on Divine Love
by M. H. Griswold
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” These loving words of Jesus, spoken centuries ago, bring hope and comfort to heavy hearts today. They help us to rely on impartial and forgiving Love. There is not an instant when divine Love is not available, and able to bring rest to all those who are willing to turn to it for strength and comfort. The mission of Jesus was to teach us the tender compassion of God, and to establish the inspiration of love for Him in our hearts.
But how often the discouraged soul, believing he can’t get relief, waits until he is anxious beyond the limit of human endurance! When all material means have failed, then, as a final resort, he humbly turns to God, and soon realizes his need of gaining a clearer and higher knowledge of Him. The whole purpose of Jesus’ teachings was to lift people’s thoughts above materiality to the spiritual unity between God and man. Jesus’ teachings constantly declared that God’s will toward His children is good.
The question naturally arises, Why do people become discouraged, fearful, and depressed? A satisfying answer to this question is given by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health: “The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love.” In this voluntary surrender we lose the belief of a selfhood apart from God, and learn the emptiness of an existence which is supposed to be independent of Him.
The realization that God is Love, is the truth that dispels any fear that God could ever be anything less than merciful and tender toward His children. We can peacefully know that there is nothing but loving-kindness in the Father’s provision for His creation.
Jesus brought healing to the sick and heavyhearted who thronged him, because he rejected and destroyed every pretense to power in anything that claimed to oppose an all-powerful God. Because he knew the unreality and powerlessness of evil, his thoughts were a penetrating light, outshining every darkened mental condition.
When we welcome the Christ, Truth, into our hearts, the light of Truth reveals to us any subtle error which is trying to confuse and destroy our assurance of the eternal perfection of God and of His perfect creation.
We have learned the value of beginning the day with the study of the Lesson Sermon. It gives us renewed assurance of God’s protection and guidance. Morning after morning we expect new unfoldment and spiritual inspiration. Through the spiritual light this gives us, wonderful healings take place.
Christian Science shows us how to master the material beliefs which are attempting to destroy our right to spiritual joy, freedom, and harmony. Doubt and fear can no more touch us, than passing storm clouds can cause the sun to stop shining. A wise man has written, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
No educated person would question the immutable laws governing mathematics. We learn that we should just as unquestionably acknowledge the truth of God’s unchanging laws of eternal harmony. We believe that each of God’s ideas has been created for a divine purpose in His holy plan. Not one of these ideas can for a moment be separated from God, from His tender, all-enfolding Love.
