The Cure for Fear

The great evil which plagues human existence is fear. As Job said, “The thing which I greatly feared is come upon me.” Mankind appears to be bound by fear, seemingly with no way of escape — fear of sickness and suffering; of failure and disaster, fear of poverty, and the loss of social standing — in a word, afraid of fear!

Through the teaching of our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mrs. Eddy, we learn that fear is a mere mental condition, a negative state of thought, not a material thing. It does not originate in matter, is not supported by matter, and it cannot be removed by anything material. Its immediate cause is a mistaken belief in the reality of the thing that is feared. In Genesis we read, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.  .  .  . Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.” John said, “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.” All that God creates is good; that which is good is not to be feared.

If we find ourselves beset by fear, stop and remember that God “is not the author of confusion, but of peace,” that from Him comes every good and perfect gift, that He is “no respecter of persons, ” and that what He is to one, He is to all. It is His good pleasure to bestow the kingdom of universal and eternal harmony upon all His children. As we hold to these truths and turn a deaf ear to all the arguments of error, our fear will decrease. And one fear overcome makes possible the overcoming of others.

The axe has been laid at the root of the tree, and we have begun to work out our salvation in the way taught and demonstrated by the Master.
